Hi guys I'm putting together a single turbo budget friendly build. No it's not a build to limit time or lack of parts.
But more of a test of inexpensive parts and there effective ness on a well known engine. First off let start with the car.

I'm working with the 2012 Mustang GT CS Five O with a 6-speed getrag. Nothing fancy so far hard Parts being used will be SCT tuning. 84 / 75 on3 performance Turbo T4 flange. 3 inch exhaust to Turbo mild Steel with three part exhaust paint to extend exhaust lifespan. Wrap the exhaust the entire length to Turbo and a turbo blanket.


This weekend I finished up the exhaust to Turbo and hung the turbo. paint and wrap will be coming in this week to do the merge pipe
So far everything has been purchased for this car from Amazon on3 performance and Columbia River mandrel. The tuner was previously purchased from Racewiers

The following weeks I will be ordering the intercooler and the aluminum 3 inch tubing for the cold side my TIG welder should be here Wednesday then I can get started on the cold side. Order my piping probably in 2 weeks my intercooler is going to be air to water and it will be trunk-mounted with ice box and selector for heat exchanger for Street driven performance. Pictures to follow this week and price list that I have so far for materials invested bio means I've done the math and this still will still be somewhat expensive to build. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel this is just the type of kit that I prefer. For the money I'll have invested I probably could have bought a JPC kit or Hellion but I like to do it myself I always have. toI hope you guys enjoy this.

I'll get my pictures and price list together mid-to-late week I want to get the pipes painted and wrapped with installed pictures along with fabrication pictures I hope you guys enjoy this thread

Interesting build, any concerns on hitting it on speed bumps? I've definitely dragged the over axle pipes just ahead of rear axle and thats on K springs

Once I get all the pipes coated and wrapped up, and installed I'll send pictures of how low it rides. but as of right now it's really good except up by the transmission primarily because this is a budget build and there's no K member involved. So far everything that I've done, sits in the factory piping locations and on Factory hangers. As many times as I've had the exhaust on and off, I'm a pro at it now takes me 15 minutes to put the hot side on from the headers 2 Turbo LOL it's all v band. so the most you do is fight with getting the clamp started. It's fun so far. Kind of made it so that I can put the factory stuff back on and nobody knows it was ever modified if I ever decide to sell it...

Anybody have any input on air to Water Street driven systems on rear mount turbos? I don't know how much cooler the air will actually be by the time it gets to the engine with the heat exchanger in the trunk,may just insulate the tubing running forward

Can I ask why you decided to go rear mount vs engine bay?

I'm not a fan of moving everything under the hood on a DD. And they are eye catching from the back .. sleeper mode so to speak.. idk I just buck the system Im guessing..

I'm doing a rear mount myself, from my understanding you may not even need an intercooler, I'm still thinking I'll be using an air to water deal.

Love these diy builds, some observations for ya, if that's a hard mount to the frame for the turbo you will likely break exhaust vbands when the motor toques with that long length of piping. A band clamp may be more forgiving back there as you will want some play. Also 3" coldside piping going all the way back up front is a lot of volume to fill, curious to see how the turbo responds.

I was wondering on this too, I'm not much of an engineer but can you use almost a Venturi styled transition to a smaller diameter for the trip back up front? It seems counterproductive to have a huge pipe to pressurize before seeing any gains..

It is commonly done that way, just keep piping smaller for the travel back. You can expand coming into/out of the intercooler core where you have volume increase and pressure drop anyway. You can maintain overall flow at pressure by sticking with the compressor cover outlet size. Which should be 2.5" on that turbo. But if your not going to be running a high pressure ratio and taxing the compressor you can easily take advantage of smaller piping to get some response back.

Jeremy how much do you think the car would actually need an intercooler, considering the length of pipe and the heat sink like nature of aluminum piping? I've read they may not be required to make the same power a traditional turbo makes when using an intercooler because the piping run is so long and the entire system is spread out across the car.

No this is hung on the 3 factory ruber mounts . Flex pipe after the y pipe from the headers.

There's a lot of Truth in what you speak. This turbo being an 84 75. I don't know . Intercooler piping is it in you ordered yet but I'm wondering if my torque and Factory horsepower would like to breathe before the Boost kicks in. Any thoughts on that I was kind of thinking that the 84 millimeter would be pushing a lot more hair before that 75 millimeters actually doing work. . None the less I have a sneaky suspicion that I should be running a two and a half inch cold pipe and secondly this turbo charger may not be the one that stays on the car it's not exactly Geared for rear mount. I just know a lot of these coyotes don't like 75 millimeters from on3 so I chose it to try out kind of a test me or if you willits a re design on the hot side not the same 75mm wheel on there 7875

I had the the STS turbo kit for awhile. I was nice for a street driver, but not for the track. It was a 60mm turbo and the most I could make was 15psi at 550 rwhp. Spool tone was not horrible, but was an issue.

Keeping it oiled is a must. And I think an intercooler is too. I had an air to air and it kept my temps down ok.

Ok guys. New update . Got that merge pipe coated wrapped. And installed for the last time tonight. Did some numbers and I'll have about 4700 into the whole build. Plus the little nickel and dime stuff I haven't put into that so about 3 Grand to go yet. Older everything in the next 3 weeks. Injectors boost controller VMP boost a pump VMP mass air housing. all the intercooling parts. I am going to do some research on the charge piping and see what I think. Dashworks 75 pound injectors innovate Motorsports boost controller with wideband and the whole list of goodies I'll be putting together for you guys to see for the build list with pricing.

I think 2.5" coldside is the better choice for this kind of setup the turbo will be speeding up the air anyway so it will move more air than what the motor could pull itself in vacuum even before you see positive pressure at the manifold. So the car will feel more responsive down low out of boost and keep volume loss to a minimum until things get moving. Not doing any math but 3" piping for 10-12 feet or so vice 2.5" pipe would be a significant difference in volume.

We ran 3" piping but ours is right next to the trans so only 4-5 feet or so up to the intercooler and the turbine is a lot closer to the motor. Turbo is a 79mm with a 3" outlet on the compressor cover.
