Hi, I am now running my 4th PA performance 200Amp alternator in 3 years and this one has been in since November last year.

The first 2 stopped working.
On the 3rd one the shaft broke resulting in a damaged timing cover.
And now this one is also starting to act funny.

Sometimes I get a 'Check Charging System' warning and then the voltmeter goes below the 12v.
When he is working it goes somewhere from 13 till 14.05 according to my SCT device that I use to monitor some parameters.

I usually get the warning at startup and after a minute or so it goes out and the voltage goes up.
Once it kicks in it stays working untill the next day or something.

What could be the reason that they are all failing? Is PA performance really that bad??

I have a 326 engine with a Edelbrock supercharger.

Any advice for me?

Thanks!!

Why doesn't an original FoMoCo get the job done?

Last time I asked about this (since it looks like you have an 05-09 S197) is that guys were recommending the alternator from the 10+ as a replacement. I've got the PA 200a and had some weird problems when I first installed it but it's been fine for the last several years. Granted, I'm running a mostly stock engine though.

I run the PA alternator below because I have the Roush S/C.

6G Alternator 130 AMP (large case) #2158WR(2158WR)

http://www.paperformance.com/roush-mustang-2158wr/

Product Description
This is a very popular replacement for the 2005-2008 Roush Mustang. It

is the same size as the factory unit and will directly bolt up to the Roush

brackets. What is unique in a Roush car is that the alternator is mounted

higher in the engine compartment and rotated backwards, facing the

engine. We have had the top ears machined off so powder coat finishes

are more common to hide any porosity in the aluminum. We use larger

capacity internals to combate the increased heat in an application spinning

backwards. 80+ amps at idle (2000 alternator shaft rpm) 160+ amps

maximum (6000 alternator shaft rpm) The stock belt can be used on
original equipment vehicles

Applications: 2005-2008 Roush Mustang

I still have the same unit and it's still working but I have read on Mustang internet sites that (Some) PM alternators have had issues and failed.

I just might have Stumbled on an answer for you.

Crown Vic Police Interceptor 215amp alternator

The 2010 oem is the way to go. Much more robust 3 phase design over the 05-09 single phase. I would check out tasca for the best price.

Really? I did it just fine. Not hard at all. If you have the ability to remove the alternator yourself. You have the skill to reclock a power cable.

Just my opinion though.

You only have to reclock the 12v cable, not the housing.

I thought you meant having to re-clock the housing.. Anyhow I misinterpreted your definition, as I didn't realize the 12v cable can be re-clocked without having to re-clock the entire housing.. Therefore I stand corrected :waytogo:

Ok!
I wonder why i didn't get an email that there were replies here :)
Just came to check and was suprised by the amount of answers!

Haven't got a lot of time to dig into it right now so I'll check it all tomorrow.

Maybe part of the problem is that the alt is indeed spinning backwards like Terry said.
The shop said that shouldn't be an issue at all but with 4 giving problems within a couple of month ... I'm having doubts.

I wanted one that gave more power because of all the things that are running like the afco HE with fans.
Having 200amp doesn't hurt I thought.

I have heard you can also run the Motorcraft GL671. It's the high output model that came on the Crown Vic Police Interceptor models. It's pricey new, can be had used, and is a stout alternator. That is what I would use.

Ok, read all things here and it comes down to 3 choises I see.

- The Motorcraft GL671 from the police interceptors
- The OEM 2010 one
- The Roush version.

Bad thing (maybe) is that for the Edelbrock Supercharger the OEM pully needs to be replaced with a special Edelbrock Pulley.

Don't know if that would work with the Motorcraft version.

Pro for the Roush version is that it is designed to work backwards. It's black so it looks better. But is only rated as a 130amp.

I'm also not sure if that 2010 one will work since it is relocated and installed backwards. :(

Philip,

I'm pretty sure mine is a 130 Amp unit that fits the Roush S/C I provided the link to above.

Pro for the Roush version is that it is designed to work backwards. It's black so it looks better. But is only rated as a 130amp.
The good thing is, it's still working thank goodness.

Phillip, I honestly don't see why the OEM 2010 wouldn't work for your particular application.. I have the Saleen VI blower on my 06 GT that requires re-locating the alternator and also installing it backwards.. Anyhow my OEM alternator has been running just fine for over the past 10 years and still going strong.. At any rate, when the time does comes to replace the alt, I'll be getting the OEM 2010 Denso for sure.. In the meantime, hope this addresses your concerns a bit more clearer..
