My dad's 1987 IROC-Z, 305 tpi, Manual (ie: not fully loaded, but close) was roughly $18k when he bought it new. Adjusting for inflation, that is roughly $39k. Not hard to believe that a Mustang is $40k+ for a fully loaded GT considering how much more "options" are now on vehicles these days.

Upper 40's??

Many of us have already played with the online configurator and came up with $52-$53k 6-speed-manual models ... the 10-spd auto is another $1600, and there were options left unchecked.

That's Vette territory.

is it?

base stingray is 55K

1LT - 61490
3LT w/ Z51 - 71235

Loaded - 3lt/upgraded tires, auto trans, some body accessories - no interior upgrades - 80,555

could easily add another $3-5K in options I think

Same argument my co-worker (GM fanboi) and I just had. He said he'd rather get a Vette for that money, but when you factor in the Vette's Performance Package, you are tagging an additional $10k on top of the Mustang (making it $60k-$65k starting), and that is not factoring if it is a manual or automatic, that is just in the starting MSRP of the Z51 pkg. Might as well hit the Grand Sport ($65k starting), which then, after options, starts getting into the $70k+ range. If I were to get a Vette, I'm not going to get barebones, I'm going to option the fker out for the track.

That puts it out of the reach for many of your "traditional" Mustang buyers I would think. For comparison, when I graduated college and got a "real" job, I bought a brand new '99GT off the lot for under $20K out the door. It was a base model, but it did what I wanted it to do.

Upper 40s would be more than I would want to spend, that's for sure. With the new model, I wouldn't think there would be many deals available, unless you go with a leftover '17.

I think my 04 GT deluxe had a MSRP of around 24

If inflation doubles every 20 years, a pretty much loaded GT
(I had every option available, except cruise on my Capri),
man trans, should be around 32K (2.5 X $12.6K) purchase price.

Not that far off I guess, but as I've mentioned before, average
pay over the past 10 years has not gone up at all and for many
gone way down.

You're right, I had no idea they had gone up that much. Before I clicked any boxes, a Stingray was at $56,500 in the builder.

Yep. Both Stingray and current gen Camaro had a nice hike in base MSRP when they were introduced. Chevy is getting proud of their cars. When the S550 first came out, its hike wasn't even close to what the Camaro had.
