Hey all, it’s been a long time since an update.
Before the weather turned to blizzard, I freshened up the intercooler with East Wood Radiator paint. The stuff is like a black powder that smells like mothballs. Really odd but looks amazing.
The Harbor Freight lift is fantastic, which I bought used for $80, but the hoist leveler was junk metal and the brackets started bending quickly so I dropped it back down, and picked up an Autozone model which worked great.
I used the two top tranny bolts and two alternator bolts to pull.
With how high the car was jacked, thankfully my dad was there to help lift the rear of the trans over the front.
I’ll clean up the bay once the weather gets a bit better.
I needed a stand that would be safe for the engine to sit and not mess up the pan, so I repurposed a wood dolly, and replaced the base with birch.
After removing the transmission, I found that a bolt was over-torqued at a dealer during the separator plate TSB and cracked an ear.
NAPA Aluminum brightener made short work of cleaning up the trans. I’ll be installing the TR6060, but wanted to have the TR3650 cleaned up for resale.
My TR6060 is a fully remanufactured rebuild from the Shelby Racing School.
Essentially it is brand new, and I paid just over $1900.
Using tech to help me learn and remember as I go. I also bag and tag every part to keep things organized.
I found that the Chrysler Harmonic Balancer removal tool works perfect! Rented/borrowed from Autozone, since you get the deposit back after.
For your reference it is OEM tool #27139
After pulling the timing cover:
I found that the crank position wheel was scratching the cover, which made me worry of crank thrust but there was no movement. It appears that the harmonic balancer is what wedges the position wheel in place, and must have been off by a small amount. Perhaps Ford didn’t press it in perfectly.
Below you can see the gouge ring.
Again NAPA aluminum brighter did well. Only 30 seconds of treatment with a plastic bristle brush.
Yanked the covers and cams:
But look what I found! Again Ford, come on!
Holes are off-center and I will be reusing these heads.
Heads were next:
Oh my look what our EPA regulations on a PCV rebreather does to a motor at only 48k miles! That’s some serious carbon!
I have a buyer lined up for my block and another for the trans.
BTW, I did have a 100% success rate with the plugs. I cracked them loose about 1/8 turn, then sprayed Valvoline carb cleaner in each cavity and let it soak overnight.
I cracked them about another 1/8 to quarter turn and let them soak about another hour again.
No problems, but look at that build-up!
