Hello everyone,

I have just hit 15,000 miles on my 2011 GT and am looking to do a total buildup from transmission to axles, with the medial portion already having been purchased:

Carbon Fiber DSS Driveshaft

McLeod RXT Clutch

McLeod Aluminum Flywheel

SR Performance Braided Clutch Line

Replacement Pilot Bearing

McLeod Hydraulic Throwout Bearing/Clutch Cylinder

Barton Short Shifter & Two Post Bracket
http://www.americanmuscle.com/barton-mt82-2post-kit.html

Whiteline Transmission Mount Bushing Insert

SR Performance Shifter Base Gasket

I have scoured the net a good deal and seen that some companies have managed to beef up the MT-82. With my limited knowledge it appears as if all have the same approach, which brings me to a few questions I can't seem to answer!

1) Are common approaches due to cost:benefit ratio skyrocketing after basic and much needed upgrades?

2) Does the MT-82 - or any transmission of similar construction - really need much improvement? Or are synchros, shift pads, and shift forks all that is needed.

3) For those in the know: If you ideally were looking to build up the MT-82 for a car running 9-10lbs on a twin set up on e85 (have been told I'll be seeing ~650rwhp at this high altitude), keeping it as stiff and stalwart as possible, what components would you use? The budget for the transmission internals is hopefully <$3000 and I was thinking of having low friction swaintech coatings on the gears etc.

I appreciate all answers and anyone who may take the time to read this. I am aware of other transmission options and they are simply not the route I choose to go.

Thank You!

Interesting build idea, as I did basically the same thing but with the Tremec T56 Magnum XL. I went with the RST clutch and there steel flywheel which I was advised is better with a supercharged car. The RST between 1500-2000 rpm in 3rd and 4th gear you do get a trans rattle or vibration if you let it get in that range. past that its quiet. If you haven't bought any of the above part's I have a barton shifter and blowfish shifter mount that I'm getting ready to sell along with an alum drive shaft for a MT-82. If your interested PM me. I thought I had low millage on my '11 with 18500 miles.
Oh yea I'm running 7lbs boost also.

Definitely don't bother with that Whiteline bushing/insert crap thing.
I hated it when I had it installed, took it out and am loving shifting again.
As far as shifters, do yourself a favor and just go right to the MGW Race Spec.
The Barton is nice, I like mine, but they've had some shaft-breaking issues, and the MGW is just that much better.

Just have Ben Calimer build the MT82 for you. Look him up on facebook or Calimer Transmissions.

I had the Barton and Whiteline for 2 years on my 14. Swapped it out last summer for an MGW.

Go with the MGW, for sure.

Most say to skip the RXT unless you absolutely need that much torque capacity, as they grab very hard and hurt driveline parts easily. RST or some other clutch would be a better choice i think.

Skip the barton, whiteline instert, and SR gasket. Get an MGW race spec (or x-spec if you really need the shorter throw) shifter instead. You'll thank us.

If you're looking at 650rwhp and a lot of drag racing, skip building the mt82 and go for the t56 swap instead.
If you're looking at 650rwhp and a street-only car, the Ben Calimer mt82 build will be a more budget friendly option.

Thank you for the replies everyone! I already have all the parts listed but I will ditch the barton/white line components listed after your unanimous input. MGW x-spec it is!

I'll also give Ben Calimer a holler. You guys are fantastic. Do you have any opinions on other transmission related components? Once this is done I'll be looking at a nasty custom 8.8 set up. I contacted Moser and they said it would be much preferable to a 9" and nearly as strong.

Any word from Ben Calimer? How much does a built MT-82 run?

I would forget about messing with the mt82 and just look for a cheap tr6060 or go with the magnum xl kit, both will work great and will hold more power trust me, currently have a rst with a tr6060 swap and loving it so far, also with an mgw shifter, every gear goes in basically by themselves.

The biggest problem I see with the MT82 is the gearing. It is terrible. First is WAAAY too short, and second isn't much better. For any drag racing whatsoever, I'd recommend the Magnum or TR6060.

My 5.0 with TVS was eating my MT82 on a daily basis.

The gearing on the mt82 is actually quite good for the mustang. If you're going through gears too quickly you probably just need a longer rear gear. The mt82 isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, but it doesn't really put up with beating on it unnecessarily.

$2500 for a stage 2 and he supplied a lightly used MT-82 instead of myself shipping mine over.

Package includes:

*Bronze shift pads
*Welded forks
*Billet shift stop
*Smoothed sliders and hubs
*Cryo treatment
*Rem Polishing
*Ceramic Bearings

Few other tricks up his sleeve included.

For the naysayers up top... The only other car who's gearing ratio felt as natural as the MT-82 coyote is my GranTurismo. Imho ford got that part right.

EDIT: Ben showcases the most honest demeanor of any business owner that I have ever dealt with. He's humble and upsells nothing ... I had to convince him I was okay paying for the ceramic bearings haha.

Was the pricing with you sending your trans back to him?

With that level of investment, ditch the Barton and Whiteline bushing for an MGW Race Spec....

This ^^^ You haven't cheaped out elsewhere. Don't cheap out on the shifter. If a person can't shift with an MGW they couldn't shift an auto with paddleshift. LOL!

^^^ Good Man. MGW offers excellent service support as well. Can't believe that they had one sitting on the shelf. There used to be a 4-6 week lead time on them. Short of a Tremec T56 Magnum XL swap out you appear good to go. Best of luck.
