In building a motor (Build Thread), I purchased a block thinking it would be a good start for a strong build. Upon receiving it, and researching the casting number, I can't find much about it, sans other people asking "What is my block?"

Cast number is RFXE-6015 2277099

There appear to never have been sleeves because the walls between cylinders look too thick

There are lots of handwritten notes on it, along with other weird numbers which aren't usually present

It had been drilled for 3v heads, and the guy from whom I bought it said he didn't do it. That's not real evidence proving anything, just a curiosity of mine. It looks like it was performed a lot more precisely than with a drill like a DIY job would be.

Here's the date code (August 31, 1998)

================================================

So, does anyone know anything about these blocks? I'm not using it for my build due to the many unknowns. Now I'm curious to find out what it is since it's sitting in the shop.

Sleeveless?
Handwriting?

I'm thinking experimental block #325 of a series.

i've seen those before, definitely something that was destined for a test-mule.
they are test blocks with cast-in sleeves (you can see there's no sleeve if you look from the bottom where the crankshaft goes)

Here are the best pictures I have at the moment of the bottom of the cylinders

Read this thread...then maybe PM kdanner on here he may be able to help you identify this...looks like in that thread he was helpful on this

Yeah, I've sent him a PM. That's the most useful thread I've found so far. A lot of the links they were referring to are no longer good (that's a decade-old thread haha)

If he's read the PM, he's probably thinking "WTF... that was 10 years ago, son"

Teskid block. from either a mark 8 or cobra

I know it's a Teksid, but here's a comparison of the '95 Mark VIII block I'm now using and this other weird block.

I don't think it's from either of those two.

New Block's cylinders

Old Block's cylinders

Also, a magnet does not stick to the cylinder walls, so there are not sleeves at all -- cast, spray, or anything.

I really doubt this mystery block would have lasted 500 miles in a Cobra or Mark VIII

Have you measured the bores? It might be a good candidate for cammer sleeves. They would put the bore at 3.700".

Cylinders are most likely Nikasil coated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikasil
Wether it was a Ford test engine or someone's project is hard to tell. Did you measure the cylinder bore to see what size they are?

We have an engineer working at our company now that worked for Ford during the Mod motor developement. I will try and see him this week and see if he has any insight on it.

I believe my uncles 98 Cobra has a RFXE block. I don't know the numbers after that but the lettering looks familiar.

I remember looking at an experimental block at Western Motorsports in Calgary from the spray-bore program and the lack of a sleeve was one of the note-able parts about that block.
I think it is one of the spray bore experimental blocks. Have a machine shop sonic test the walls as the word on the street was that the spray bore blocks could go out to 3.7" as well.

Def a teksid. Maybe a FWD block out of a continental?
