I decided to make a post about a new project I think some of you may be interested in, and personally my favorite posts are detailed build threads, so enjoy!

Basically this thread is going to be a detailed blog of sorts, of me swapping in a 5.0 Coyote into my 2010 GT. There are a few threads like this on this forum, but there are mainly for drag only cars. I will be retaining power steering, A/C, factory gauges, Sync, etc.

So before people post about why not sell my car and buy a 2011+, I have too much money tied up into the chassis/suspension to justify that, would end up costing me a lot more in the long run.

So what prompted me to do this? Well the beginning of December, 2 days before leaving for a deployment, I took my car out for a nice long drive up Palomar mountain, on the way home the #1 intake valve decided to break off and drop into the cylinder. I crunched the numbers and decided to go the 5.0 route instead of repairing my current setup. I'm currently on my way home and will post some pics of the carnage when I start doing the engine autopsy. I'm expecting the piston, combustion chamber, and maybe the cylinder walls to be toast. I was able to pull the plugs and #1 was badly damaged, along with 2 broken cam followers, and the cam journal was badly scored. In case you are curious, here is what the old setup was:

~600 RWHP on 93
Stock Block
Kellog stroker crank
manley H-Beam rods
Diamond Coated Pistons
ARP Hardware
Comp Cams Stage 3 Blower
Comp limiters/Hi Load valve springs
Whipple 2.3L w. 10 Rib Drive System

So here is where I could use some input, basically I am going to build a really nasty NA engine for now, and in about 9-14 months I will be looking for a Turbo setup that retains A/C, P/S, and the swaybar. This is what I had in mind:

Fuel: E85
F-150 core Coyote (found one for $1500 w. 1200mi)
Ford Control Pack
Stock rebalanced Crank
Manely H-Beam rods
Diamond Pistons 11.5:1 comp
RGR/JPC CNC'ed Heads - not sure on "stage" yet
Comp Stage 3 N/A cams (for now)
Comp Limiters
Cobra jet Intake
BOSS Tensioners
BOSS Pulse ring
ATI Super Damper
ARP Hardware
Canton Road race pan
Meziere water pump
Billet Oil Pump gears
Acc Bracket kit from PBtH

I'll post up some pics next week of the progress. If anyone has any tips on how to integrate the Ford Control pack into the stock harness, please let me know.

Sounds pretty solid. I wouldn't buy cams twice though. I would keep the stock cams until you go FI then buy aftermarket cams.

If the block and crank are able to be repaired I might be interested in it.

You found a core Coyote engine for $1500 with only 1200 miles??? Wow!

Looking forward to seeing more on this build. Good luck!

for the $$ you spend on a FRPP control pack I bet you could get a set of factor 2011 harnesses from a wrecked car and make it all work like a 2011-up setup and get a EPAS and not need those PBH accessory brackets

I looked into this, but a 2011+ harness/ecu has built in Anti-theft features. It would be too much of a hassle to do that. I would need swap over the instument cluster, and the ignition cylinder/keys. Maybe the whole column too, not to mention the TC system is completely different. As far as EPAS, not sure if that will work with my planned Griggs/Cortex SLA conversion down the road. With the bracket kit, it also allows me to keep my factory air, I won't need to use a 2011+ A/C compressor w/ custom lines. I'm sure I'll hit some road blocks, but thats why I posted this, to share information with you guys :)

Do you have any pics of your JLT CAI on your Cobra jet intake? I'd be curious to see it, I havent been too impressed with the Ford Racing version.

I hand modified the intake tube it flows more than a frpp CAI it is 5" at the throttle body and 4.5" at MAF

depending who you are going to use for tuning the limiters arent needed. 2 like others mentioned the cams i would look into JPC for a custom grind that will work good N/A and will also be benificial when you go turbo and not mess with or need to limit the vct functions and loose low end tq. As far as a turbo kit to retain stock everything is the JPC turbo kit. For the intake on the CJ manifold, Rev auto has a 5" CAI that is making the most power to this date with the CJ setups. on pump they have been in the mid 450-475. And on E85 well into the 500+ rwhp range.

Thanks for the info. I am unable to load JPC's website on my current crappy SAT connection, but I was under the impression A/C or P/S had to be deleted. I'll look into it more when I get home, and have good interwebs.

There are a couple of kits that let you retain the P/S and the A/C. When I was looking into swapping a 5.0 in my 09 I googled 5.0 Coyote Power Steering Kits and I found a couple that allowed me to keep A/C. They aren't very wallet friendly but they do allow you to keep both.

Finally made it back to San Diego today!

Pulled the heads off the engine, here is what I found:

Intake Valve #1 looks like it snapped off, dropped into the cylinder, follower became dislodged, causing the cam journal to spin against it, damaging it.

The valve did some damage to the piston, the cylinder walls still look good though.

You can see where the valve broke, and it looks like it tried to get sucked out of the exhaust. The valve guide is completely destroyed, not sure if these heads can be salvaged.
