Need some help deciding on gears for my auto.

3:73 OR 4:10 what do you guys think?

It's not my daily driver but it may become later. I do a lot of highway driving but really don't care about the motor noise. How much MPG will is lose with the 4:10 compare to the 3:15 I have right now. I'm leaning towards to 4:10 but would like some input.

I have a shop that will be doing the instal They charging $485+tx
I will also be welding my axle shaft the same time for around $200+tx

Are those decent price's?

if this is a M6, you have to think about the gear ratios of the transmission they are geared higher than the transmissions in fords past transmission, 3.73's in the MT-82 are like having 4.10's in a T56 transmission. heck 5th gear is the 1:1 ratio with the MT-82's, 1st gear with 3.73's in a stock car goes quick, I couldn't imagine 4.10's. I would imaging that would be like 4.56's in a T-56.

edit: if this is a A6 your crazy to put 3.73's, the highest I would go with a auto is a 3.31 or 3.55

Auto 6 speed.

so 3.73 and 4.10 are not a good idea?

people choosing between 3.73, 4.10, and 4.30 comes from most american transmissions having a 1:1 4th gear and a 1st gear usually between 3.35 and 2.90. newer transmission have deeper gears in the case and taller gears out back to help reduce drivetrain loss by slowing down the driveshaft.

on 05-10 GTs 4.10 or 4.30 was ok for a drag racer becuase of the 3.35 1st and 1:1 4th. but now your trans has like a 4.something 1st and does not get to 1:1 until 5th. so to maintain appropriate gear ratios a lot of guys are running 3.15-3.55 and rarely going over 3.73.

P.S. when these transes first came out I wonder who was the first guy to be like "well I am going to use 28" tire and drag race so I need 4.56s". I wonder how that worked out for him LOL. I know when they first came out JPC immediatly dropped a 4.10 rear in one and had to shift 5th in the 1/4 mile.

3.15 or 3.31s, depending on tires being run.

Matt broke into the 11's with a 2013 A6, headers, cai, and tune. This is with 4.10 gears.

3.31s will put you at 7500ish in 3rd at the stripe, on 28" tires.

3.55s will do it with a 30" tire at a touch more RPM.

4.30s will do it in 4th with a 28" tire.

More gear equals harder to get traction.

JPC just had a 2011+ A6 go 10.78 in the 1/4 with 4.10s, on 28s...

The JPC car runs E85 and has lightweight bumpers and other weight reduction done.

Honestly I love my 3.15's. With a good tune on street tires it just roasts the tires now. I do have a set of RT-S wheels and drag radials going on but I think I'll stick with my 3.15's still.
