why are the gains with hot rod cams so inconsistent?

Wow...while in theory that makes sense and I agree but that would cost a lot of money for 3 cam swaps, 3 tunes and 3 dyno sessions....maybe one day MM&FF or 5.0 will do a cam shootout.

The manufacturer with the biggest advertising spread that month would make the most power.

My guess is in the write up they would all be close but equally great in their own way with no clear cut winner. The story would be followed by full page advertisements from each company with data from the test.

Yes, I'm cynical.

I think you are 100% right! I have noticed that kinda trend or favoritism. I know I picked up more than 5hp.

My car has NOTICEABLE gains over 3.5k, and it's quite running right yet. Can wait to see what it does on the dyno/track after a get it running right.

And it's not just placebo effect. The traction control light on the dash doesnt just come on at a roll for fun. :)

ok...if you say so.....with the specs on the HR cams I can't see how they work great but as long as you are happy with them that's all that matters.

I am happy with my BBR stage 1 cams. I would definitely recommend some gears with the cams though. Down low they kinda suck. But overall my car made 335rwhp and 325rwtq with the old jlt cai, steeda udp, steeda cmdp and offroad x. Once I put my LT's on I expect to be somewhere around 345-350ish.

My hot rods are great with my supercharger! Not as good as a custom blower grind but still much better than stock

Any proof other than what you assume and that you like how they sound? Dyno graph?

Increased closed valve overalp(both valves closed at the same time) from a tight lsa cam will effect power throughout the curve on a boosted setup that generates full boost down low, it restricts flow. Yes you will see peak gains up top from the increased lift but low to mid range will suffer( the majority of your powerband).
The tight lsa also brings peak torque down lower which is great for na but not needed at all with a twin screw where peak torque is generated down low. This will also effect power production till the upper rpms where the increase lift starts to show gains.
If you have dyno numbers and a graph i can overlay it with a stock cam ts car, you can see the difference.

i agree that hot rods are still better then stock cams with a blower. i'll see if i can find my dyno and post it, but i had LTs, o/r h-pipe, cams and e-force installed at one time so i don't know how each affected the total hp but my numbers seem very very good for 9PSI pulley on the blower.

*edit, i'm actually planning on getting the hot rods for my procharged car too.

again, i don't think they are worse they stock cams and do offer better perfomance but aren't ideal for blowers. i was thinking of going with brenspeed's blower rockers but i haven't decided.

nope, no dyno's. I like em. They idle amazing, the car pulls like a bat out of hell and I'm happy with them. As said, I'm pretty sure they're better than stock. Also, as I said, they can't compete with a blower specific cam. But I prefer the sound of the Hot Rods over a blower cam right now. I'll sacrifice 10-20hp for it. Hell, I can't get traction anyways with 500whp!

I cant remember who it is but I think it was on moddedmustangs where a guy went from hot rods to blower cams and gained about 6hp and lost 1-2ft lbs. High lift cams will do better than stock with a blower... they're not as optimal as a blower grind cam but they are still a nice gain in power.

I have my CMDPs and long tubes but sadly I have to go to MD for a month or two so I wont be able to install them. Im going to put them on and have Bama send me a new 93 octane tune and ill have a dyno run to see what numbers I put down. Im hoping to get 330-335 to the wheels.

I remember when I couldn't find out why my supercharger wasn't making any boost, one of the major mustang companies out there recommended I ditch my long tubes and hot rods and said I might be "blowing" boost out and therefore not making any since the Saleen with a big 4" pulley only makes around 4-5 psi.

Granted I called some other shops and posted here and everyone told me i was nuts if I switched to a blower cam because the cost wouldn't be worth a handful of horsepower...
