Touring Edition Axle-back:

The Touring Edition is the perfect configuration for those who appreciate a hearty muscle tone without having to bear in-cabin drone. Construction of full 3” .065”-wall stainless steel while featuring 180 Technology®, the Touring Edition roars when you want it, and quiet when you need it.

Sound Perfection: 180 Technology® by AWE.

As exhaust gases exit the Mustang GT’s 5.0L engine and flow into an AWE 180 Technology® equipped resonator, they pass through strategically located ports, and into reflection chambers. Sound waves, carried by these exhaust gasses, bounce off the walls of the reflection chambers. By controlling the size and location of the ports and the chambers, we also control when the sound waves exit the chambers. The specific timing of when the reflected sound waves rejoin the main exhaust flow creates a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree out-of-phase sound wave that cancels out problematic frequencies. More on 180 Technology® by AWE in the tab above.

Track Edition Axle-back:

If raw and rowdy are your speed, the Track Edition is your dose of steel. The loudest of the lot, the Track Edition Axle-back retains all the engineering and precision of the Touring Edition, including the 3” diameter tubing, minus the 180 Technology®. The result? Completely raw wake-the-dead level muscle.

These versions are known to get rowdy in the mid range, and may be too much for many. For that reason, these particular versions cannot be returned due to sound preference. Prepare yourself.

Important fitment note:

The factory ball-and-socket clamp is to be reused.

Data:

Tip Options:

All tip options include the AWE logo and double walling to ensure a mirror finish even under hard usage. All tips are individually adjustable, allowing depth into the bumper to be set according to personal taste

4.5” slash-cut diamond black tips
4.5” slash-cut chrome silver tips

What’s in the box?

Complete Touring or Track Edition Axle-back Exhaust, two 4.5” tips in desired finish, all necessary clamps and hardware for installation, and installation instructions.

I like the helmholtz resonator implementation. That's clever.

Why only for GTs though? You can stick a set of GT500 mufflers on a 5.0, so why not the other way?

Hey, Ras!

Thanks for the kind words.

Since part numbers are different, and without physically fitting, we cannot confirm they would be applicable.

Sell me a set for my GT500 at a good price, and I'll do the test fit. How about that? I'll even give you videos and pictures.

Been looking for a set of Corsas for the car for a long time, but didn't like the price.

Wowsa, for touring mufflers, they're pretty loud but I like the sound and if no drone, that's a winner! I'm not trading out my FR500S cans on my GT500 but if I were, these would be strong contenders.

Holy crap, a Coyote exhaust that's not raspy. I am floored. How much for the first one and any chance it's available with black tips?

Edit:

Nevermind. Just saw it's $700 for the black--tip version.
$700?????? It's two mufflers, WTF???

I would love to see exhaust makers provide in cabin stock vs their exhaust comparisons on uphill pulls in high gear between 2200-2800 RPM where drone is commonly the issue with 3v and coyote mustangs AND record the interior sound level with a decibel meter (stock v specific aftermarket exhaust).

Distributors could also do this when they make before/after videos of the different exhaust setups as well. There is a decibel app available for most smart phones free. IMHO this would minimize returns, improve buying, and lower the thread count on "which exhaust".

Excellent idea. On a 3V, the drone is typ around 2000 rpm. Going up a hill really puts a load on the eng..esp in a higher gear. Drone drives me nuts. I had it really bad after the LT's + hi-flo cats went in. That was with FRS-500 mufflers on my 2010. Way too loud too. My 'fix' was to weld in a pair of M80's... just before the axle. Knocked the level way down to acceptable. Drone is much reduced, but still there.... right at 2000-2200 rpm.

Thinking about it you're right about the RPM range on both engine styles. I was having a senior moment of memory fatigue.

I went through 8 different combinations of exhaust on the old 3V before I finally realized what killed drone: Helmholtz resonators tuned for the correct frequency range.

Without going too far into the technical side of things -- because I'm still not sure my understanding is completely correct -- any sound wave can be amplified or reduced by a secondary sound wave. Same waveform, amplitude, and phase, and the two waves will interfere constructively, however, reverse the phase and the two waves will cancel each other out.

Because we can't have an identical sound generator sitting at the opposite end of our exhaust, you wouldn't think that there would be a way to create this counter-wave. This is where Helmholtz resonators come into play. They're effectively closed-end resonators, attached to the exhaust path, in which sound waves will bounce back, and, if the length of the resonator is correct, will produce a quarter length counter-wave.

For a simple piece of closed end pipe, the correct length of a quarter length is easy to calculate: speed of sound/frequency cancelled/4. You'd still have to account for the speed of sound changing as exhaust temps go up, but the frequency of the drone shouldn't. You know it's always there around 2050rpm.

In its crudest form, this is what it looks like: http://s1.promotionsupplies.com/ebay//auturbo/images/catback/au-cb-350z-car-15.jpg

Now, what got me interested in these mufflers was the mention of Helmholtz. I know the principle works, and it works well.

Evidently AWE has found a way to package a Helmholtz resonator in a very neat package with their Touring mufflers.

What's the root cause of the drone in the 1st place ? And why is it centered around 2 k rpm ?

It's difficult to explain, but I can give you a good example of it.

You know how you can make an empty beer bottle sing by blowing over the opening with a certain force?

Same principle. Resonance.

Whether it’s M80s or any other brand resonator, that’s really the most significant way to minimize drone on these cars. The sound waves through the long stretch of pipe that doesn’t have anything (mid pipe and OTA pipe) makes those sound waves echo. The resonators breaks that up. And for whatever magically reasoning, having them slightly staggered, maybe an inch or so offset, makes a positive difference as well.
