hey guys i got a question.

has anyone experienced where the shifter on these S cars will shake or move when the car goes over bumps in the road?
ive never felt this before and now all the sudden anytime the rear end goes over some bumps, even small ones at low speed the shifter will shake / move up and down.

if mods might be to blame here is a lkist of whats on the car that could pertain to this issue.

Roush Shifter
CHE lca's
CHE lca relco's
BMR springs
BMP Adj PHB.

still has the stock 2 peice DS and all stock mounts.

and my car is a 09 with 25k on the clock.

ive searched and read with no definite cause or answer.
ive read everything from tranny and motor mounts to the shifter about to fall apart.
any ideas where too look at while im under the car tomorrow?

Just check and make sure that the 2 bolts at the rear of the housing where it mounts to the trans tunnel are tightened up, and that the linkage bolts are secure as well.

Can you physically make it move while sitting still? If you can, it would be my guess that it just moves when the driveline shifts. I'm not too sure though... haven't had a problem like this with my Hurst... but I'm just throwing out some ideas.

definately gonna check all the bolts.
IIRC only bolts ive broke loose on the car were the trans X member bolts and the shifter linkage bolts.
hopefully none of them backed off.

more than anything it just spooked me that all the sudden it did this.
its been tight since day 1 and now started this moving bs.

Yeah because I had a smilar issue, to where my linkage arm bolt on the Hurst backed off, because the guy I had helping me install the shifter neglected to use Loctite... but I removed, put some Loctite on it, and haven't had an issue since.

Does it move vertically, horizontally, laterally? How?

Its more likely to happen on lowered cars from what I have seen, for reference mine did it bad with a one piece driveshaft, added prothane motor mounts and it went away. But i agree, check to make sure the mount and linkage are all secured tightly on your shifter.

It sounds like the shifter bolt that goes to the side of the transmission is loose/backing out. Had the same problem and found that bolt loose. The 2009's have the sound deadening in the trans. tunnel that makes getting that bolt in and out a bitch. I used threadlocker when installing the Hurst but I had the bolt in and out 3 times because I thought I was crossthreading the bolt.
After I found that bolt loose I loosened the trans. crossmember and dropped the trans. down a little to get more room to install the bolt, no more problem.

Well after being under the car for 3 hrs in the heat I cannot find any issue with mounts or bolts...
And I pryed and shook on everything and nothing caused the shaking.
I did talk to a few local former s197 owners that said their cars did it after a yr or so of driving.
So I'm wondering where else to look? Could motor mounts have already got weak?

I have similar problems. I'm lowered, Steeda shifter, and 1 piece driveshaft. When I hit a big bump, I can actually feel the shifter bottoming out on the driveshaft. Stupid remote shifters...

well on the way home i decided to try something.
cruising if i get into rough road i feel it through the shifter.
if i gas it to say 1/2 throttle i dont feel anything...
so lightblade i think u might be onto something with the motor mounts.

Check the bolts on the shift handle itself. Mine backed out after several months and caused alot of movement.

wondering if any of you know :

I have an extra shift linkage that I bought a while back in case I ever busted mine and it is missing the bushings. FoMoCoG646 7R33-7C453-AA on the sticker that is on it. It's the piece straight off of the transmission to the shifter.

I want new split sleeve assy.(for back) and rubber bushing assy. (for front). Does anyone know where these can be found? Anyone have part numbers?

I called my local (small) Ford dealership parts dept. and they did not have an answer.

thank you
gig

Gig,
usually Tousley can get those hard to find parts, don't know if you've tried them or not yet?

No I haven't, good idea! thank you. I'll ask him this weekend. If I find something out, I'll put it in this thread.

From what I know you cannot buy those bushings separately..

I had heard that before too. Last resort, I can make them. I'm a machinist, so I would make them... (gov't project) using UHMW or bronze etc. :hi:

anyone ever figure this out. i'm having the same issue and it's driving me nuts.

checked the shifter linkage and it is solid to the body and transmission. bolts are torqued to spec. to me, it seems like the transmission itself is moving up and down and hitting the shifter linkage. but for the transmission to move the mounts must be bad or loose. i checked those and they are fine.

Are ya'll checking the shifter bushings? The ones on the ends of the shifter. Most of the aftermarkets are poly.
