I tried a 275-40-18 on a 9" wide rim, on the front, and it felt really sluggish. Then got new 10" wide rims..and put the 275-40-18 onto the new 18 x 10" rim... now that's very responsive. Previously I had 255-45-18's on the 9" wide rims..on the front..and they were also responsive... then got this idea to swap my spare 275-40-18 rubber onto the 9" rims..... dumb idea.
If you want wider rubber, use wider rims. I use 285-40-18's on 10" wide rims on the rears. Plan next spring is to shift the 285's to the front.... then install 305-35-19's.. on new 19 x 10" rear rims.
A 265 or 275 will fit your 8.5" wide rims. The issue is not the rears, it's the fronts. For DD use, it will feel sluggish + unresponsive. IMO, you will not like it.
