3k rpm rattle, valve, or other noise?

Hey guys,

Getting around to chasing down a rattle or some kind of noise in my '11 5.0. In any other motor, I would be chasing what sounds like a bit of valve noise. Only comes on around 2500-3200 rpm, only when I'm light on the throttle, and i can make it go away by pedaling the throttle on/off. No change with fresh oil.

I have done some searching and haven't found anything related other than the idle tick. Added 15k to the clock in the last 6 months and it still runs just a great as when I got it with 53k on it -- currently at 68k

6 speed manual, only mods I'm aware of is the Magnaflow Street axle backs and a Steeda (medium compound) shifter bushing. Runs like it should and I can squeeze out some serious MPGs with my last run to NC netted 28.7mpg running at least 10 over the limit the entire trip.

Next on my list is to pull the coil covers off, check/zip tie a bunch of other stuff up tight, and see if it makes any difference.

Any input is appreciated.
Iz

Pull the car next to a wall on the driver's side. Is the noise coming from the top or bottom of the engine?

What oil filter are you using?

Sounds amazingly like an issue I had with my first engine...

Does it eat any oil between changes? There may have been an incident that hurt the timing components before your ownership. I'd suggest you check/ have checked the timing components.

I'm chasing a similar issue at work. So far put in new rockers and lash adjusters and still there. Pulling the head next well see what happens

No loss of oil. Hadn't thought of checking it by a wall, but I'll see what I can figure out.

Been through 2 different brand oils and filters -- no change.

Will keep chasing and post back up. Next easy step for me is going to be checking all the covers, stuff something under them to make sure they aren't rattling, and see if anything changes. Part of me says it is a harmonic rattle at just the right RPM/frequency.

Who knows... :D

Had a noise like this on my 2005 while itwas still stock and low miles. Turned out to be the seperator plate between the tranny and engine block was coming into contact with the crank hub at about 2200 RPM. Sounded like a heat shield on a cat rattling...though the cats on later model cars don't have that shield on them. While this was on a 3V setup and there was a tech bulletin on it, and it may not pertain to your 13, (assuming you have a manual car) it still may be something to consider.

The find was done with a stethoscope with the car up on a rack and running in gear. THe fix required pulling the tranny , removing the sep plate and opening the hole up. The crank and associated components were inspected for runout and verified okay.

Just brain storming as rattles can be very frustrating to isolate and resolve.

I pulled the cams yesterday and this is what I found. If you put a light to the cam journals you can see the high and low spots so to me it looks like the head was not machined correctly. The cam on the intake side was jacked up on 3 or 4 of the journals causing like a squeak or a birdchirp like sound.

Try some higher octane fuel. It could be detonation due to the PCM being reflashed with a tune requiring something higher than 87.

That wasn't it so now were thinking its the tensioner making noise after taking it apart again lol this is what the inside of the tensioner looks like you can see the marks on it

Check the ball flange connections at the H pipe.

I have had them leak so that they "ticked" at idle. But have also had them silent at idle, and doing the exact thing you describe.

When acceleration, I would hear a brief period, of what sounded like valve train clatter, between 3000-3250 RPM. I thought no way it could be exhaust leaking, in such a specific operating condition, but proved myself wrong.

All of those parts look fine to me. Small bearing diameters, and the cams run at 1/2 the speed of the engine...

Get a stethoscope and listen to it. Turns out it was the tensioner this whole time.20171117_145018_Film4.jpg 20171117_145023_Film4.jpg

Have researched this topic extensively and it seems to be piston rattle.. goes away when engine temp reaches middle. Tsb on issue. Ford reflashes Ecm. Does nothing. Have heard no downside as far as longevity.

How about you get an ids and cancel the cylinder see if it goes away. Powerbalance in the ids. Listen to the engine with a stethoscope and check the front of the timing cover and the valvetrane
