Automatic dipped beam!
Now that I have fixed a DRL light that actually works, it would be nice with an automatic dipped beam too!
So I could not help buying a small "electronics" which via a photocell-controlled switching relay can turn on the dipped beam.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-Headlight-Sensor-Light-Delay-Control-Light-Modified-Adjustable-FOR-CAR/152481578406?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648
Then the question arises how to wire upp automatic dipped beam on our cars?
If you googel the question you do not get so many hits and the majority assume it's impossible because it's computer-controlled,
It may be computer-controlled, but the actual switch that you turn on the light is very much manual/analog.
If you tap in to the wires, you should be able to emulate what the switch does, with a suitable relay connection.
In order for the following explanation to be easier, I attach the connection diagram of the switch and the knob.
There are quite a few cords to the contact so the first thing we are going to do is find out witch we are interested in.
If we look at the drawing, we see that no. 1,7 is earth and it is good to know, we also see that No. 9 is HL off and No. 10 is HL on.
We also see that the switch also affects No. 5 that is parking light.
We also see that the connector works by grounding either: No. 9 in position 0 (HL off), or No. 5 in position 1 (PL on), and No. 10 in position 2 (HL on).
You can test this by removing the contact and, shortcut from No. 7 to 9.5, and 10.
What we need to do is to break the earth to No. 9 and Earth No. 10 to turn on the HL on.
This makes it very easy with a changing relay. Just cut cord number 9 and connect to relay contacts that are closed
When the relay is at rest (30, 87a), 30 contacts the contact side and 87a to the car side, then connect the no. 10 to the (87) terminal of the relay.
What then happens when we activate the relay is that the ground is moved from nr 9 to nr 10.
Then only the activation of the relay is left, and the easiest place to take the voltage I think is at the safety button that sits inside the left-kick panel,
take the yellow-green cord and connect to (85) then it's only the ground left, easiest way to connect the ground is to connect(30 and 86) on the relay,
(then the relay will release as soon as you turn the knob and the parkeing light also works normally).
Now that you know how it works, more possibilities are opened, such as automatic light on windscreen wipers.
Saw later that http://swelight.net/webshop/sl01 sells a module that works according to the instructions exactly like this
(quite expensive relay, but it may contain some additional component to delay a bit or so)

They're weird like that across the board. Our 06 has auto up/down for both windows. My 08 Expedition only had it on the driver window.
