Hey everybody. Been awhile since I posted. I have done quite a bit to my stang in the past few months. Currently I am debating on a cam install, however I have been getting mixed reviews online regarding the ones I was looking into at first and came across a few others. I was originally looking at comp cams mudda thumpas (which in fact I have recently found out that all of comp cams requires the phaser limiters) I have heard that people have been having issues with them so I veered away from that. Recently looked into Ford performance hot rod cams and heard some good things nothing bad, yet as well as brenspeed Detroit rocker cams. My point on this thread is to ask all of you who have done this before, for your opinions. I want to get the best bang for my buck with the setup I'm going with right now. I have fords performance intake manifold, jlt series 3, and currently stock cats with axle back deletedbwith an h pipe and of course , a tuner. In the warm months I'm going cat deletes with Jones turbine resonators. Some of this information may be a little redundant but i thought I should throw it out there. Thanks guys. Let me know what you think the best route is

The "drop in" cams for the 3V (Hot Rods, Comp, Brenspeed) are all pretty similar as far as power gains- within a few HP of each other anyway.

Also, without long tube headers you're leaving a fair bit of power on the table when you install cams. Just FYI.

Headers are on the table as well. Just curious, I've heard some good things about MAC headers. Question is, long or short? I'm going cat deletes here soon so what headers would be best to bolt up to the stock h pipe without any other fab?

Only shorty headers will bolt up to the stock mid pipe. Long tubes require their own mid pipe. IMO if you're not going with long tubes then stick with the stock manifolds.

I have Kooks long tubes with hotrods. Ford says you get virtually no gain without long tube headers. Reasonable gain with. I really like mine, I went with on off road H and a Lito tune. I don't think my car could run any better. (driveability, smooth power, pulling harder to redline, etc. - not power output FI would fix that) Like was said, if you aren't going LTH, don't waste the time and $ on any cams.

Have an end-game plan on your build and plan from there.

It is your car, make it yours and stick to a build plan, know what you plan on doing with the car and dont waste $$ doing things over or not complimenting the build with other mods.

Selection really depends on what YOU will be doing with the car and your goals.

I have comp phaser limiters and have had no problem with them. I'm using JDM Engineering "Sterling" cams and they make real good power in the higher RPM's. But you'll also need different valve springs when you get into the cams that make noticeable power. Lastly... Kooks long tube headers to compliment everything.

I have had comp phase limiters for 2 years and have no issues with them. You just have to tell your tuner that you have them or it will throw a code if they don't limit the advance in the tune. The first cams in my car were stage 2 Muther Thumpers and it lurched and stalled trying to idle around in a parking lot looking for a space. I would have to keep pushing in the clutch to let it catch up. The Muther Thumpers sounded awesome but made it a pain to drive under normal conditions. I changed out to Brenspeed Detroit Rockers N/A cams and are very happy with the results. I still have the limiters installed but don't really need them.

Ended up going with with performance hotrod cams, and an off road no cat setup. I'm just curious and I'm pretty sure I'm correct, but being that I am now cammed and have no cats it's it normal to smell the exhaust a bit more? I always assumed it was true. I currently run a 93 race tune from American muscle tuning with bama. I have 2 resonators, h pipe no cats the Ford performance hotrod cams and Ford performance intake and jlt series 3 cai. Is there anyone that can provide a better tune? Id like to do some testing. Not that I don't trust AM tuning but just want to get a feel for other tunes. Maybe I shouldn't run the 93 race tune all the time and just switch to a performance run when driving normal? I don't know. Thanks for the input.

I ran mine with no cats for a little while, the exhaust stunk and I couldn't stand it, ended up putting the cats back on.

As for the tunes, I originally had Bama tunes and they couldn't get my car to idle correctly with the cams. I went with Lito, if you can get ahold of him and you have a laptop, that's the way to go.

Also I run my 93 octane tune all the time.

I’ll second Lito. I had a Bama tune on my car with barely anything done and they still managed to get the tune wrong enough to mess up my engine. If you like your money and don’t want to have to build your engine, stay away from Bama.

Lito is awesome and a great tuner but a second option could be Lund Racing. They do a great job also. You should really get a custom tune with data logging.

I am debating on it. AM wants to data log also. I haven't had any issues actually runs great.

That’s what I thought until it was too late.
That as it may be, theres multiple things that can coincide with what happened to your engine. Now tell me, what happened? Ive heard things happen more so based on maintenance items such as a bad fuel filter causing lean/pinging and what not or just running the wrong octane and misuse of parts and what not. And how well the care was taken care of. But, Like I said Ive already replaced my engine but that was way before I do all my mods to it. It runs great, it idles great, pulls fantastic, no ticking knocking, etc. I always use 93 octane. I just switched to a 91 octane tune but I fill up with 93. The 93 race tune is awesome but its too much for regular driving around.

Always ran premium gas. Changed fuel filter every 15k miles. Changed oil every 3k with 5w20 full synthetic. Never took the car to the track. Rarely even drove it hard. Cleaned air filter every 15k miles. Not really sure what more could’ve been done. And when I had problems, wouldn’t you know it, Bama sure was quick to tell me sorry for your luck. I asked for a datalog and was told I didn’t need it since I was basically stock. Good group of people over there.

Rarely will I ever bad mouth a company or tell people to go elsewhere. They are actually the only company I try to turn people away from.
