So here's my situation... I have a set of new OEM plastic tensioners that were installed, primed, and then had to be compressed by hand (I used the chain guide to slowly push it back in while still installed) and removed when I pulled the head to retrieve a bolt that dropped down in the combustion chamber.

- Can OEM plastic tensioners be reused if they are removed in this manner, or should they be considered a one time use item when installed and primed?

As long as the o-ring is in good shape they should be ok to reuse.

The o rings will leak. I would get the older metal ones.

The older ones can break the guides over time. I use them on my car for the vary reason you posted but I don't drive many miles on mine.

If the seals are good on the old ones use them, but if they are as pictured above they need to go.

yea i heard the old ones ratchet and get stuck, winding up breaking the guides.

the newer ones just keep tension with a spring when waiting for oil pressure

IMO either will get the the job done. I had steel in my big bore stroker and never had a problem breaking guides. And I beat that motor pretty hard. It saw full boost at least once every time I drove it. When we did the timing components in the 06 the kit came with plastic tensioners. They're still going strong 10k+ miles later. But that car doesn't get driven as hard.
