Venezuela is in a major state of turmoil. People we know down there who are missionaries are on strict water rationing and electrical rationing. One family at their church had their child kidnapped and had to pay a ransom to get the child back. Gun control laws down there have enabled organized crime to seize control of areas. This is straight from a resident I know that is down there. It's not something I read on a conservative website. You cannot legally own a gun in Venezuela. I offered him one of mine thinking it was only a matter of access to one. Its not something he was willing to risk having in his possession because of his status there.

Things have gone down hill since 1998 when Hugo Chavez took over. The recent election that has been highly questioned has generated massive amounts of violence and protests. It's really a sad state.

My heart goes out to those folks down there. I honestly don't know what I'd do in that situation.

It makes me realize how truly blessed and fortunate we are just to be living in the United States. No, it's not perfect, but life doesn't suck here, either.

Yes, if they are missionaries are probably down south were things got horrid this past week, government took out of circulation the biggest bill we had (who would buy a single cigarette at most), and only gave 72 hours to let the banks receive it, new bills have not arrived yet and except on the main cities lots of people does not uses banks so people got really mad and things out of control.

Regarding guns, you can own a gun legally (basically restricted to one handgun, certain calibers only, no weird bullets and one small magazine) but is very very complicated. OTOH robbers, kidnappers, etc. has a huge arsenal, people gets kidnapped with rifles, grenades, you name it. Most of the robbers and kidnappers are policemen also.

My heart goes out to those folks down there. I honestly don't know what I'd do in that situation.

It is very sad as this was a nice country a few years back, with its problems but nothing compared to what it has become, this cleptocratic narco-state has destroyed it.

Anyone who wanted Bernie Sanders for President here should have to go live in Venezuela for a year.

I sincerely don't think is the same thing, from my point of view, I have seen and visited the US quite a lot and some EU countries and appreciate the plus and cons of both, you have socialist inclined countries in the EU where you can still live a great live, work on basically what you want and still be rich. Mothers can have maternity leaves and if you fall ill you don't have to go broke and take your family with you, for example.

If you ask my impression, I tend to see the europeans having happier lives with less stress and less work. You americans really work a lot and I admire that too.

Back to socialism, I don't think pure socialism will ever work nowhere as it goes against basic human nature.

I also don't completely agree with its detractors that pose Venezuela as socialism example because it really isn't a true socialism and also don't agree with its defenders that say this is not socialism because it is in part.

This is a socialist masqueraded cleptocracy managed by narcs, in resume. lol.

In my socialist country, we do big time trees. They've even come down in price since our economy took a big dump this year!

New currency bills on the street, here you have the lowest denomination of the old and new bill denominations currency sets, this is not a joke.
