Not all Ford's fault. Vehicles in 1993 didn't have all the tech and "safety" things that today's vehicles have or are required to have. That shit costs money. 1993 was a simpler time.

How much have wages gone up -

The same basic everyman person that bought a ranger 20 years ago, cannot afford one now. Today that person needs to buy a fake chinese car. Where are these? OR they can walk, cycle, take the bus.

Ranger customers these days are the independently wealthy. Wall street people.

Certainly an element of truth in that assessment.

For a little bit of balance. The most basic Ranger is $25,495 MSRP. It includes the same 2.3 EB/10A trans, has A/C, P/W, cloth seats. Most people can afford this.

The real issue is way too many people way over buy their vehicles. Do people really need loaded $85K diesel F-350 4x4 crew cab duallys to drive to work and the mall? No. But they want them.

That 25k truck would rip... high tq. engine, 10 speed...

Oh wait, it's 5000 lb... LOL!

I told PENTALAB I wanted to buy a new GT500 for my 40th in a couple years. I have since realized it will be over 100,000. That's porsche money. It's amazing there's a market for these, but here, the GT350's were 85 grand and after 1-2 years rotting on the lot they have somehow mostly been sold. They go to middle aged women who got a big divorce settlement, or men who drive like middle aged women who have gotten a big divorce settlement. Don't take it over 3500 rpm, it might blow up!!

My next truck may be a Tacoma...

Have you priced one out recently?

The new Ranger is almost identical in pricing to those outdated things ...

Same thing with the Colorado/Canyon twins

I know Ford & Ford lovers rebutted the oil change snafu (e.g. stating tire/fender well must be removed), but even tearing into the wheel well is a bitch. Back in '89, I owned a Pontiac Sunbird and hated every oil/filter change b/c you still had to "" the front wheels and rip out 1/2 the inner well to gain filter access. Then, you end up spilling oil everywhere as well. Either way, hate to say it, love my 2018 Chevy Colorado...filter's where it should be (accessible). I know that's a swear word here (Chevy), but engineers/designers should put more thought into shade-tree mechanics (IMO).

Jaguar had vehicles that required removal of the eng rad.... to gain access to the drivers side headlamp.

I thought my wife's Wrangler Rubicon 2dr was crazy at 41k MSRP for a Wrangler!

46k for a small/ medium pick up is high (to me at least). 46k in 2013 was a LS Boss 302. Now get have 65k GT350s so guess realistically 46k for a small pickup will sell as doesn't seem like price stops people anymore.

Shade-tree mechanics are a dying breed. There are very few people that perform minor service and/or inspections on their vehicles, let alone guys that get deep into their vehicles (suspension, rear-end, transmission, engine) these days. Same goes for the home handyman/woman.

Exactly. The majority of people do not know and have no interest in understanding how to do such work.

They just pay whatever the cost is.

As for oil changes in the new Ranger, what's the interval? Does it have a "smart" setup to tell you when to get it serviced?

I think the home handyman is alive and well

There are 2 home depot's in my nowheresville town. Enormous. 100x the retail square footage selling performance parts.

Lots of jobber parts suppliers for auto shops but they are disappearing.

Probably once a year or 10,000 miles like most late-model Fords

As much money as all new cars and trucks cost these days and all the companys trying to come out with autonomous driving vehicles it would be a lot cheaper if they just throw in a chauffeur.

Don't get me wrong, it's a sharp rig & I'll probably see it in-person in a few weeks (Midlands Auto Show). It's just sad to see us "self-helpers" becoming a thing of the past. Dad taught us mechanics at an early age, on the farm, and I plan to continue until hands can't grip a tool.

Also, for the non-mechanic, dealers really push the "after-sales" stuff like service plans, protectants, etc...makes it easy.

I dread the day I get too old to do simple maintenance. My wife's grandfather gave her an old Ranger/Mazda B3000 because "everybody should own a truck". When I changed the oil, the filter was barely hand tight and the oil pan plug was completely stripped. All the oil previous oil changes were done at the dealership he bought it from because he can no longer do it himself.

I am already there and I hate it. Arthritis has me so beaten up I can't do hardly anything anymore.
