Can you make any comments about the Feal C/Os for the S197?

My impression from looking at their stuff is that they're using generic threaded shock bodies in application-specific housings like every other $1k Taiwan coilover. But if instagram is to be believed he's valving them in-house for each spring rate and application.

Did these have enough travel for a street-driven car, or are they all over the bumpstops on an imperfect road?

Honestly I couldn’t really say for normal street driving. I had the suspension set so low it was basically riding on the rear bump stops. It wasn’t too bad though. My s13 was slammed on stance coilovers, that felt like I didn’t even have suspension

I have nothing to offer other than support! This is a cool idea, and one that I kicked around in my head a few times if I ever had multiple Mustangs to race. (I don't.)

Would you rather have more sidewall or bigger brakes? You can fit the 4-pot Brembos in some 18" wheels, but I'm pretty sure zero 17" wheels would fit.

Chances are that on dirt you aren't going to need 14" Brembos.

From what everyone that’s been involved in rally they’ve said even the calipers I have now can be too big. For the the Subaru Sti and Wrx guys it’s very common for them to downsize their brake package also. I’m keeping mine on because I’m the future to be a little more competitive I’ll for sure need more power and figure out a good tire. At that point the stock brakes should be good to slow the heavy girl down. It’ll be like a Rwd Group B car lol.

Update got my Bilstein Struts and Gt500 top mounts from LMR today. Unfortunately one of the top mounts split open during shipping and bearings and lube was everywhere. I sent them and email and within minutes they sent another mount out to me with a representative being very kind about the situation. So shoutout to Late model restoration

Here in Austin Texas there are some dudes that have a little dirt track setup for some “rallycross”. I just moved here and unfortunately the event last weekend got cancelled because of rain but I look forward to bringing my completely stock 2005 gt AUTO to mess around in the dirt in a few weeks. I think the stock 4x4 stance and the stock 17s with HELLA HARD cheap tires should be a lot of fun. RIP bump stops. I’ll post some photos here of me sideways after I go. There is a little private road track here so I’ll be lowering the car and doing handling mods for that soon but want to do off-road stuff before then. Stoked on your build so keep it up.

Yeah you’ll have to throw up the pics man! That’s awesome, thanks for the support as well.

So build update. I got a few parts of the rear suspension on the other day. I was planning on finishing everything up this week but unfortunately messed up my leg bad doing some downhill mtb so everything is postponed.

Currently I’m planning on getting some 16in steel wheels to keep it cheap. And with the closed face it should keep rocks out. It’s a 16x6.5 5x114.3 +40mm offset with a 71.5 hub bore size. This should fit right? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MA3OFTN/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A2RCRYNMKIZ2T9&psc=1

After they come in I’m planning on getting some 16in rally tires from maxsport to try them out https://maxsportamericas.com/products/rb3?variant=33998116481

After I go through those everyone’s has told me that these tires are the best bet for what I’m doing. A guy used to run a 05 gt and a foxbody with them and said they sucked in hard packed gravel but everywhere else kicked ass

Gt500 top mounts, gt500 springs (shoutout to bl817) and the Bilsteins all bolted right up. Removed the rear sway bar because the bushing were so worn the bar was useless. So I’ll be running no sways front and rear. Looks like I got about 29-1/2in and 29in of Droop Front and rear. Curious if what Travel amount it has.

Next step I’m just waiting on those plastic clips to come in to mount the wheel well liners, fix a side skirt, mount it all up, then fabricate a skid plate. After that I’m going to try to get some cheap 16in wheels and try to fit them, maybe I’ll have to throw those V6 Calipers on front

Since the car will be up on stands for a bit longer I’m thinking of removing all the Evap stuff to save weight.
Does anyone know of any good “how to” write ups? I’ve searched for them but I only come across banter about the subject

Currently my Bama tuner had a glitch awhile ago and somehow erased my stock tune, coincidently my hard drive with the file got corrupted around the same time so my tuner is currently a paper weight. Called Bama and they said to take the car to a ford dealer for a reflash. I might do that in the future after taking all this junk out, but I’m not worried about driving with the check engine light on. I already have been for a bit

Threw the fender splash guards in today and figured to start the car and let her idle since the fuel has been sitting for awhile. After about 30 minutes of idle the car started pouring water from what looked like above the power steering pump. Looked at all the lines and I don’t see any rips or tears. No idea what caused it but as soon as it cooled off it stopped pouring. Hmmm

Pinhole leak in a hose that only drips when the system is under pressure. Since there's no coolant in it now, do yourself a favor and just replace ALL the hoses.

That’s actually a really good precaution. I’ll do that for sure.
Currently filled it back up, checked the fan fuses, let it run to make sure the fan was still working. So far the car has been running longer then previously and the thermostat has cycled about 5 times. Not a drop. I’m super confused

I lied got it to leak again. Has to be the hose above the power steering pump

560119A6-776D-49EE-B6FD-87FF57A81916.jpeg So the other day I was talking to a co worker about my build and his dad used to rally race for a long time in japan with a Subaru. He things one of the best thing I should do is up my final drive higher from 4.10s, he said “The best setup rally cars are doing 90-100mph in their final gear”. Which does make sense since rarely you’ll be going faster than that. I’ve seen a stage where drivers were doing around 110-120 in California.

Does anyone have experience with high gears? Here’s a chart I did for 5.7 final drive

RIP - You will be missed
Just a guess, but I suspect that your 'best final gear' with the TR3650 is NOT going to be 5th. It's just too far away from 4th and you fall out of the powerband. As you bring 5th into a more usable speed range you start making 1st kind of useless (do you really need a gear that runs out of speed at 27 mph?)

Here's a comparison between 5.70 (black lines) and 3.55 (red). Not that I'm advocating for 3.55's, it's only for comparison against a more familiar gearset. 2nd gear with 5.70's sits practically on top of 1st with 3.55's.

Also note that the mph's at rpms for the 5.70 lines don't quite match those from the Google +1 calculator button version - it's because that calculator does not know that tires turn about 3.5% more rpms at any given speed (due to tire tread compression) than what calculating from tire diameter alone predicts. None of the online calculators that work from tire diameter or tire sizing understand this. Many times it doesn't much matter, sometimes it does.

full

The real problem is the gear ratios chosen for the TR3650.

I'd stick with the 4.10's and forget 5th even exists.
