I was told by the tuning companies, you should only update if your initial
connection to the car and tune cannot be accomplished. When the tuners
are updated, so are the calibration files and ECU IDs for later releases of
ECUs. For the most part, they never actually update the tunes themselves.
Thus, there is no need to update the tuner if it worked out of the box. People
think that they need to update to get new or updated canned tunes, and that is
just not the case. A 2009 tuner will have the same 2005-2008 tunes that are
on a 2013 release tuner, there will not be a difference. The difference is, support
for newer ECUs, that's it.

They'll even tell you the risk of bricking the tuner every time you update, thus
they do not recommend it unless your ECU or CALIBRATION is not recognized.
Diablosport actually told me that when I asked about a Predator I had, that I
wanted to update. They asked if it connected and tuned, I said YES, they said
then there is no need to update it, that they hardly ever update an actual tune.
If they did, it would be on the next generation model tuner. Any tune update
would be because it caused an anomaly in the car.

So, if your tuner worked when you got it, then there was no need to update it
unless you bought a new car that had an ECU it did not support. You can still use
a Predator tuner on mustangs. The InTune 1000, or 2000, will not have any
improved anything anyway...

Couldn't agree more, it's not an iPhone.
If it installs a tune and keeps working there is ZERO need to update it. It's doing its job, leave it alone it's a device with only two jobs. It's for tuning and logging and if it's been doing those park that bitch in the trunk and leave it alone.

Someone commented on me using my x3 at the track last year. He goes, oh man you gotta get the new x4! Lol for what!? Is it going to make me go faster!?

I didn't update my Xcal2 for 10 years. Never skipped a beat. Needed to update when I switched cars and now all I can use it for is datalogging.

I wish SCT would come out with another Xcal2. I don't need all the extra crap. I just need it to hold a tune.

I had trouble datalogging with livelink II on an X3 so I tried to update it and it failed. I put an old firmware file back on it and use that X3 to load tunes and use a newer X3 to datalog with.
SCT's customer support for X3's really sucks

08MustangDude,
Thanks for this info. I always saw to update the turner.

I have always wondered why we just don't have software to install these tunes from our phones. Seems like it'd be easy enough. I guess they just make too much money from selling tuner devices.

They had a device called the iTSX that pretty much did that. It was glitchy and less reliable than the handhelds.
Not sure if it is still available.

I guess no one has ever had their car reflashed with the newest update? Pays to know people at dealerships. Reflash with fords fixes and then retune it with a new tune.

That doesn't help with the hardware issue the OP is having though. He needs to have the tuner fixed or replaced.

I was just thinking back to when I bought my X3 back in 2013, I did need to do a firmware update. It changed from being able to only store a couple of tunes to the ability to store up to 10 tunes. I guess maybe they do a feature update every now and then.

Who has 10 tunes that they are using? lol

Wonder what firmware that was, it does sound cool to have that capability though
