I really liked my exedy mach 500. It is a bit heavier than stock but not that big of a deal.

I now have a McLeod RST and I'll be pulling it out and having it rebuilt as an RXT. If you think you may try drag racing, don't get the RST. My car is good for one pass, then it gets too hot and it gets impossible to shift.
The floater plate rattle drives me nuts as well so unless you are going to make the power to require a twin disc, it isn't worth the noise.

Thanks.

I'll have to double-check whether my 4.6L uses the 6 bolt or the 8 bolt flywheel. I think I'd be OK at 25 lbs and that gearing, but I think 20 lbs would probably be a little too light for daily driving around town with 3.73 in the axle and a 2.66 1st for gearing.

I am going off of context here, so be gentle. Are you saying that a heavier flywheel will aid with starting from a stop due to your taller ratio in first gear?

Not sure if you were directing that at me or 07gts197.

I honestly don't see any drag racing in my future, given that there hasn't been any in the 55+ years that I've been driving. But I do appreciate your information regarding clutch choice here.

Yes.

One of the things that flywheel weight does for you other than make the engine run smoother is when getting underway from a full stop it temporarily supplies extra torque to help avoid stalling or ending up with the engine lugging because the revs dropped too far. Basically a heavier flywheel gives you more rotational momentum to convert into more added transmission input shaft torque than what a lighter flywheel can give you. Technically it's a rotational inertia and rpm drop kind of thing. Or, a little like having extra engine displacement for the first second or two.

It's also the flip side to lighter flywheels helping acceleration once you're underway with full clutch engagement, where you're losing some crankshaft torque to accelerate the flywheel in a rotational sense.

It was directed at the OP, I know drag racing isn't your thing Norm.

For you, get something listed as a stage 1, even the stock clutch is a solid piece on these cars. No point in going to a stiffer pedal if you don't need to.
The only clutch that I've used that I have been disappointed in is the McLeod RST. It does shift smoothly but the twin disc rattle takes away from the streetability at cruising speeds and the fact it can't handle heat makes it a disappointing product.

WOW. I really appreciate the amount of remarks on this post! Thank You.
I was looking at the clutch recommendations and seems as if there may be 2 options.
10 spline and a 26 spline. I would like to order one before I tear out the tranny but I'm not sure of what one.
Am i missing something or do I have to remove it first?

05-10 5-speed in the GT is 10 spline stock.
If it is a TR6060 or T56 magnum 6 speed, it is a 26 spline.
11-19 getrag is 23 spline.

I just ordered a Luk RepSet and Luk flywheel. I'm on a bit of a budget right now so that was best for me, plus I've had no issues with the stock clutch. Best part was that it cost $314 altogether from RockAuto.

I've used a McLeod before on another car, but I think there's something about their 4.6L offerings to that requires you to use their flywheel as well.

Norm

I'm using the stock flywheel with my McLeod Super Street Pro, no issues. Not a dual disc clutch though.

Thanks; that's very much the way I'm thinking. Though the OE clutch is still holding up just fine after just over 50000 miles, a couple thousand of which were road course miles (but still not 'abusive'). I think street driving in hilly country and even autocross are harder on clutches than HPDE.

I wouldn't even be considering a new clutch yet if it wasn't for the transmission swap that I'm all but committed to doing. But this seemed like a good place to learn a little more.

If you are getting rid of your 3650 and it still shifts like butter, maybe we can work a price out, in the future.. :)

I'll keep that in mind, and when it happens I'll also have an MGW shifter not doing anything any more either (but I will be keeping the OE shift knob). I can tell you that my 3650 was never power-shifted, and was double-clutch rev-matched on almost every downshift whether on the track or on the street.

The reason I'm looking to upgrade is for the closer gear ratio spacing. In the 3650 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th are spaced so wide that I'm basically limited to using 3rd and 4th gears on road courses. 2nd is too short to be of much use, and 5th is way too tall.

One thing I do suspect is that the external link between the shifter and the transmission shift rail proper has developed some play.

No worries. Also, I have a mgw, gen one, I think, but haven't installed it yet.. it's grease boot on the bottom side is split and I am torn on installing it. I dunno where to get one to replace it yet. The pictures did not show that when I bought it used.
