I’d strongly suggest a fluid and filter change, not a flush. A flush is risky. You can do multiple fluid changes over a few months if the old stuff is particularly dirty. And I’d recommend the OEM fluid, Motorcraft MERCON V ATF, as per the owner’s manual. Stick with OEM for everything if possible.

I had a similar problem and the fix was replacing the ignition switch in the steering column.

I’m in Mooresville, just north of Charlotte. I had to pass CA smog one last time so that’s why I had the CARB legal 3.0 pulley kit. I’m thinking that was the weakest X-Charger kit ever made with losing PSI boost to the intercooler. I moved to NC a year later and upgraded to the 2.6 pulley.

The only CARB legal forced induction options ever offered for the 4.0 were the Vortech and the X-Charger. The owners of Explorer Express retired and closed up shop after producing their limited run of 300 X-Chargers. So now the Vortech is the only choice.

I’d strongly recommend getting lower gears installed so you can really enjoy the 8.8 upgrade. The gears make a big difference! I have 3.73s on my 4.0 and it’s a great all around gear. Others recommend 4.10s if you don’t mind the higher RPMs on the interstate.
