I've got a negative example...

My 2008 RS3 64K mile engine failed when a thrust bearing decided to disintegrate...
I was hoping to get at least 100K miles from this engine. sigh

But I do agree with everyone else, that is a little much for that car. Keep looking, there are better deals out there.

The only stuff I'm seeing for less than $10k is either up there in miles, or salvage title. I'm much more weary of salvage title from a resale perspective than I am the mileage. Now, bump the price to $12k, and there are plenty of options, but that is 50% more money than we're talking, so that only makes sense.

Keep in mind that there is a lot more to a car then just the motor. Suspension components, fuel pumps, and other electronics have a limited lifespan.

Some people are dumb and too proud. My mother just offered a guy the payoff on his house that is foreclosed. He has like a couple weeks before it is gone and he has to be out. Instead of taking her offer he thinks it is "worth more". Yeah, but your losing it... instead of keeping the foreclosure offf the his credit he is going to let the bank have it and totally wreck his credit.

When I car shop I never trade in. Once I actually talked the dealer down to their lowest they were willing to accept after I said I did not have a trade. Had my sister bring the car in to see what they would offer her. Got x amount. Later, for kicks I asked how much for my trade lol (same car). They offered me the same "amount" eventually after I came clean on my little trick. They finally offered me what they offered her but said they would have to ask more for the new car (the difference). WTF? People really fall for that? So, lets make sure to finance more and pay more interest. I will never get people and thier willingness to throw themselves at the dealers like they do.

If the owner of the car you are speaking of is like the majority of the idiots out there then $5,000 probably won't do it. They will make it "look" like he has a higher down payment (by claiming even "more" of a down payment, which may allow the buyer to finance a more expensive car, when really the "difference" is tacked on the price of the original negotiation. Not... "actual cash value".

Gotta love fucktards...

That is how I have done it in the past. Had one salesman get pissed because it took him 5 days to work a deal with me then I told him about my trade. hehe

Sounds like a decent deal to me. I know that the SOHC 4.6s tend to last a really really long time in F150s and stuff, so I wouldn't worry about the motor too much.

Zombie thread. I bought the car a couple of months ago. It's in GREAT shape and is kicking ass as a daily driver. I freshened up the front end with all new Moog components. I've got some K Springs on the parts shelf I'm probably going to put on, and I'll likely do Koni STR.T shocks at the same time. Rear axle bearings need to be changed, but that's no big deal. Trans output seal needs to be changed, but again - no big deal. All in all I'll be surprised if I spend $300 getting it to 100%. Interior is spotless. Really pleased with my purchase.

EDIT - Well, it IS pissing me off right now with a damn alarm randomly going off, so there is that. Forgot about that one.
