I'm getting ready to do a shifter install and I'm wondering they recommend unbolting the drive shaft ?

MGW says it isn't necessary but my fingers are too big to try and work around it. It's too easy to just unbolt it and get it out of the way.

What year car and what brand shifter?

I have done three different shifters on my '13 Coyote with the MT-82 (Steeda Tri-Ax, Barton, and MGW), and I have never unbolted the drive shaft. It may make the job easier, like skwerl said, but I have never found it necessary.

I didn't drop mine on my '06 when I installed the Hurst Billet. It would have made things easier, but I didn't find it necessary.

No need to drop the DS!!

When I dropped the trans support I used a 2 x 4 between the exhaust and body to lever the whole thing down so I could get my FAT hands on top of the transmission.......worked better than having a buddy help me!!

GOOD LUCK......you will LOVE the MGW shifter!!:worthy:

Agree that you don't need to drop the driveshaft. Installed an MGW in my '07 over the winter and I found that simply loosening the transmission support gave me plenty of room. By the way, I love the way it shifts.

I worked on the one on my Bullitt both ways, with and without the driveshaft. When I got the '14 and watched the MGW install video, I never even attempted it before dropping the driveshaft.

Have you felt that shifter before? Its pretty tough with the strong centering spring and will take some getting used to. I had one in my 07 but now that my dads using the car I swapped my hurst back in and holy hell what a difference lol.

Unbolting the driveshaft is fairly easy to do vs working around it. I've done it both ways. If I was to do it again I'd unbolt the front of the ds right away. It's far easier than working around it imo.

I was really going to go with the MGW but I kinda got sucked into the Steeda sale . If this doesn't work out someone will get a deal on a Tri Ax

I did mine without even thinking about removing the driveshaft, didn't really seem to be in the way, I thought the install was pretty simple.
