When going over at bump in the road it sounds and feels like something is hitting my MGW shifter. At first I thought it was something in the trunk moving around.

The shifter doesn’t have any up and down play. The driveshaft doesn’t looking like it is hitting the shifter linkage. I check all the bolts and they seem to be tight. I tried to grab the trans link and shifter linkage and they don’t feel loose. I had the shift installed for around 6 years. I had a clutch installed in March.

What else should I check before taking it to a shop?

how many turns out is the shifter set? IIRC the bottom of the adjustment can sit very close to DS

Could it be contacting the old OEM shifter rear bracket studs?

I don't think it hitting that rear bracket, I can see were it is clean and dirty on the two Pin that connect to the shifter body.

I didn't try to tighten them down, the bolts look really rusty.

has anyone ever broken those studs?

Is it a gen1 3650 mgw? Mine was doing the same thing for a bit before it broke. The threads on the part that adjusts in and out sheared off.

Looks like a gen1 to me all black, although the add looks like the add for the new design that one I have never seen. There was a thread design revision on the first one after it came out though.

Maybe try adjusting it in an check the torque on the shifter linkage bolt and see if the clunk goes away. Or give George at mgw a call he will take care of you.

See how the back bracket is part of the shifter boday

Indeed that's what the one I had that broke looked like. Apparently there was a gen 1.5 or the new one could be considered a gen3.

I was on the preorder list so was literally one of the first 100 guys to get the s197 mgw shifter in 07 when it came out. I would give George a call to get clarification.

He's also the company owner when he's not installing a shifter for a customer or giving a visitor a personal guided tour through the facility. When I was there in 2014 I believe he said he had about 20-25 employees.

I have an original MGW shifter in my 05 GT. I had set the turns out to around seven and had no problems.I later r/r driveshaft with a new ShaftMasters 4" Aluminum driveshaft. Drove off and could hear clicking sound from underside of the car. Back up on the lift and found that the bottom of the shifter was coming in contact with the weights that were added to balance the driveshaft. Lined up perfectly. Adjusted the turns to 5 and never had a problem after that. Probable not your problem but just something else to check

Thanks zoom. I have check the clearance between the linkage and the drive shaft. I can fit my hand between them. I have and both of those mods for 5 to 6 years
I've had many emails with George, we are leaning towards the linkage bar wearing out. Guess I got into the most wanted section looking for one.
