Just installed Pypes long tubes and off-road H pipe (and yes...it drones awful around 2,000 rpm). Already had SLP loud mouths as axle backs, and now the sound is outrageous. Don't get me wrong...at a car event (like Endless Summer Cruisin in OC, Md) the sound is perfect. But...I do have neighbors. Anyone have experience with different axle backs to find a happy median between OEM and open headers?

Hahahaha. I had to scroll up to see which section we were in.

But to answer your question mid mount some 18” glass packs before the axle and then straight pipe them out the back.

I run BBK long tube headers with X cross over w/hi flow cads, to Mac S/S 4" mufflers, and Q.T.P. electric cut outs, Best sound I ever heard on any mustang. I have Ford racing cams also.

I have the same setup with an x pipe ( I also ran an H for a while). I’ve ran the following with zero drone: FR500’s, FRP GTA’s, Borla ATK’s, Borla Touring, and my current setup is Bassani race cans. Deep tone, quiet around town until you need it loud. I’m 52 so I don’t need or want it obnoxiously loud. Good luck.

I’ve had the following that drone: MACs (with or without cats they drone) love the sound but the drone is killer, Magnaflow race cans sound awesome but again the drone is brutal. LMR SVE race cans sound good but they drone as well.

You might look at the Borla Touring AB, I have that (branded as Ford Racing), it's pretty decent. Screams at WOT but pretty reasonable through the rest of the RPM range, although I also have high flow cats on my midpipe.

I've had several different axle backs on my car since installing the headers and I've found that just about everything is LOUD. Generally they're made to sound good with the factory cats so that's why. Mid mounted mufflers will quiet it down a decent amount too, either some glasspacks or round case mufflers like Magnaflows or Pypes M80's. BTW- I tried MBRP's like cammed S197 has, they sound good but SO LOUD.

I’ve never had a problem with drone. If it drones I just drive faster, drone goes away, no problem.

I ran Pypes long-tubes / catless X-pipe, into factory resonators / ota pipes into MBRP axle backs and it wasn't bad at all, this is at a pretty low rpm at 80 mph 6R80/3.15 rear gears, and 28" tall rear tires. Sounded really good imo, but I don't get off on a noisy set-up, unless your making pro-mod style power.

My problem with drone is that every day, I have to climb a long hill with a 55 mph speed limit, and 55-65 mph seems to be the drone sweet spot on every vehicle I drive (had the same problem with my truck)

I had bad drone at 1.9 k rpm with jba LT's and mating high flow cats..and FRS-500 mufflers... + way too damned loud. The easy fix was a pair of pypes SS M80's, welded in.. just before the axle. Problem solved, drone severely reduced, but not quite gone..and overall level is now acceptable. Pypes SS M80's are dirt cheap at AM and else where. Flanges where the clamps go on each end of the M80 were cut off with the bandsaw... then M80's welded into place. Pypes M80's are made from 304 stainless. They still shine, zero issues since the install years ago. At the time I had to do something, it was simply way too loud, and I have to be able to go out late at night..and slide in real early in the morning. Got busted by local cops..and they were very close to impounding the car..for... "too loud".

The local..chinese cop that busted me for..'stunting' had me stopped for 1 hr.... and the prick actually pulled a gun on me, when I went to get out of the car. Then sez my brand new plate came up as... 'terminated'..then reads me the riot act about.."too loud". Then he spots the boost gauge and goes beserko. Says I have a 'turbo'.

I've been looking around - Vermont or Boulder might be the place to be, also sweden/norway/finland. Once Trudeau and his guys and whoever comes next finish off the country.

Every day the trans canada pipeline doesn't get built cost $40 million per day. The greens / ndp have their head up their ass. Once trump trashes the nafta agreement and shuts down the auto industry in ontario, huge tariffs on softwood lumber, steel and aluminum....then it's game over, done, finished.

Borla touring with long tube headers and cat-less X pipe. For the most part I can have a normal conversation in the car, and it is loud when I want it to be.
