Hi there, I am looking at getting a used 06 Mustang with the v6/auto combo, it's bone stock and pretty low on miles, around 118k. From what little info I have been able to find it seems that the best bang for the buck, as far as upgrades go, is getting the computer retuned, exhaust upgrades (obviously), as well as coil packs and cold air intakes. My prior hot rodding experience came in the form of Clevelands and 460s with carbs and pushrods, all very knuckle dragger type stuff when compared to this Mustang, but I've come to realise that I like things like air conditioning, cup holders, working radios, and fuel economy, basically all the creature comforts that get scrapped when your only concern is GO-FAST. I'm looking forward to learning all I can about this car first hand and from everyone here as well!

If I could I would, but it's just not in the budget. My 73 Ranchero is more than fast enough to satisfy my need for speed, so at least there's that.
But you are talking about modding it. You would be better served buying a V8 and not modding it vs a V6 and trying to find aftermarket for that.

118K is not low mileage in my book.

Also, don't waste time or money on a 4.0 SOHC Mustang. If you gotta have a V6 get a 3.7 DOHC car. Otherwise you can buy a nice GT for $12,000ish. Guy I know just bought a Premium Package '06 for like $12 or $13K with less than 30,000 miles on it.

The mods that I am considering are mostly around how I can get a bit more bang for my buck at the pump, ideally I would like to get it up to around 20 mpg city driving. I also figure if I want to really go fast later on I won't feel bad about heavily modifying a base model that already has some milage on it.

Nothing will make much of a difference performance wise on a 4.0 short of a supercharger. If you really want that mustang, Just put some wheels & tires on it, and maybe some appearance mods. As for MPG, I was getting anywhere from 21-26 mpg when mine still had the 4.0.

I get 18-22 mpg with my supercharged Roush.... My wife gets 26 with her 07 Grand Marquis...
Get a V8 or put the money into the Ranchero....

There is still time to get a different/better car. I think a Hyundai elantra wagon would be good, great mileage, manual trans.

That is a terrible car, even when it was brand new. A Mustang in name only. And 118k is not low miles.

First off,...."There is no substitute for cubic inches". Period!
I'm quite satisfied with my '06 V6/auto....but it's a daily driver. If I'd any ideas of putting a cold air intake, dual exhausts, and a tune on it I wouldn't have bought it, 'cause no matter how much money you throw at them, they're still just a V6.

OP; You never state your budget for this car and/or asking price for this '06 V6...??

IMO, like others, if you have the ca$h, go w/V8 manual and mod away. Lots of used garage queens out there to take over and make your own.

there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a v6. Don't listen to these V8 ppl.
They are ignorant!

"cause no matter how much money you throw at them, they're still just a V6."
This is bullshit! You can get a kit that will make it as good as a V8 and you dont even have to use premium gas. So shut your mouth ignorant v8 person.

I have an '06 v6 and I agree with the folks suggesting you look at the v8s - for the simple reason that the differential sucks. I got tired of only one wheel spinning so I had a new differential installed with 3.73 gears. I also put on front and rear GT anti-sway bars and lowered it; so it's essentially a GT with a v6 motor. But if I had to do it over again, I would have gone for the v8. It will save you $$$$ in the long run and you'll be happier.
