So I gotta say, there really is a noticeable difference. Probably the only trans drain/fill the car has ever seen. Changed at 120K.

When the car has just warmed up, I can have my foot to the floor and it'll grind for a second going from 2nd to 3rd. Like it has something blocking 3rd gear. Anyone else ever experience that?

When you put the MGW in, did it take care of the lockout issue with 3rd?
Nope, better but still there, had a Hurst in there before and thought it was too reduced throw so mgw got set at different points but its still there.
I have a couple ideas for this summer otherwise I may have it pulled for a rebuild?

Well hell...I hope I'm not looking at a rebuild, but then again, if I swap in a motor that makes 500whp +/-, I'm wondering if a TR3650 of this age can handle it consistently?

I'm saving up for a used 6060 that I hope I can freshen for a reasonable cost if required. I think most people are asking a lot of the 3650, it doesn't have the money into the synchros for banging gears. 6060 will be better, still not perfect.

Handling 500 will be no problem, I've seen more 6060 hard part failures than 3650.

Well that's good. Last thing I need is something to go wrong in the trans. right when I swap in a new motor. Lol.

Put dexron/mercon III in and your grind should go away if the syncro isnt already damaged. Anything synthetic is to slick for these transmissions. Your trans will be fine with 500hp as long as you dont get a clutch that shocks the shit out of the trans with sticky tires.

I was running $$$ synchromesh, went to cheap Dexron mercon non synthetic, the car shifts the same or better. I'd just change it every year or two.

Save your money.

Bump. I've been driving the car for a few weeks now with the co-op brand dexron/mercon .... it's almost magical how much better the shifting has gotten 2-3. As in... should I bother to service the trans when I have the engine out good. I was out with a friend for lunch and was blazing the tires right up to 6500 in 2nd, banging 3rd right away.

Crazy.

Holy old thread, Batman. Lol. Thanks for the update, brother. It'll come in handy next time someone is searching this topic.

If people still use "search" that is...:goofy_batman:

Synchromesh in mine and it is certainly smoother then when I was running mercon or mercon V. I think climate plays a big role in the success of swapping fluids.

I've used Mobil1 ATF (Mercon V) in my 04 GT, 08 GT, and now my 07. I bought the 07 used and had trouble getting into 1st gear sometimes, and took some effort to come out of gear. I changed the fluid with Mobil1 ATF (old fluid came out brown at 73k miles) and the problems went away. No lockout issues at high RPM, ever (knock on wood).

I beat on the car pretty hard to get the fluid hot, still seemed to work. When I had the synchromesh installed when the car was hot, shifting performance deteriorated.

Thing is we're still chasing wild hairs here, what if the prior issues were my clutch line getting hot, master or slave changing, all I know is under as close to identical conditions I could create a much cheaper non synthetic legacy spec fluid worked as well as the expensive stuff.

If you want your tr 3650 to last only use merc dex III in it. I won’t even use Mercon V. I have a 2005 mustang gt with 102000 miles that still shifts perfect. Hell I still have the original clutch that still grabs hard.
Seriously. Do not use anything else. Don’t use Mobil 1. Don’t use synchromesh no redline and no synthetic. Dex III Merc only!
