Usually if you order a remanned engine the company has local installers they deal with. It allows you to keep any warranty as well.

You might want to look at your budget before doing anything. The engines you've mentioned vary widely price wise.
Yea, there is a lot of price variance. Among the three options I identified, the second one is most attractive price-wise.

I have looked at 4.6s on eBay, eighty6gt. Some appear like they could be good options. I have just never used eBay for a purchase so large. What does “LKQ” mean?

Thank you for the recent suggestions, folks. You have sparked ideas I had not previously considered. This week should tell the tale of how I will be proceeding.

Decision made. Am simply going to go with a scrap yard 4.6 with a 6 month guarantee. The replacement engine has lower miles than the original, which had clocked 116K. The installer will provide a 6 month guarantee too. I’ll post about the outcome when complete.

Well, the replacement 4.6 is in the car and running. I saw it at the mechanic’s shop yesterday. There is a ticking noise that seems to come from the passenger side of the engine and the idle is a little rough at low RPMs, but things look pretty good aside from this. Am I correct in thinking that the car’s computer and factory tune may need a little time to adjust for the different engine, spark plugs, and coils? The mechanic wanted to keep the car until Monday so he could make sure all is well. I intend to test drive it Monday, with him, before accepting the car and making payment. Smooth revving across the RPM range, absence of inappropriate noise, good engine performance on the road, and correctly functioning instruments and accessories will be my focus during testing.

The 4.6 3v is notorious for passenger side ticking. It’s annoying but shouldn’t be of concern. Mines been doing it since around 20k miles, got 65k on it now. Hasn’t gotten better, hasn’t gotten worse. It’s just there lol

Ford makes noisy engines in general lol. My wife's 2009 focus has a nasty tick on cold start that has been there forever. 65K on it and it continues to run. Coyotes are known to tick too.

I'm sorry this happened OP but on the bright side if it's gonna grenade at least they had to deal with it in this scenario and not you doing all the labor and cost.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Candy 10. Mine has been a little different. The 4.6 30K mi. engine in an 08 Bullitt that I had ran smoothly with no ticking, as did the original 116K mi engine in my present 06 GT. Hopefully, my mechanic and I will find a way to eliminate the ticking Monday.

Thank you for your sympathy, Riptide. Concerning my original engine grenading, the event was due to a mechanic’s error in judgement, which was preceded by my efforts at preventive maintenance. Now and then I can’t help but think about the fact that my original engine seemed to run perfectly before I got involved in changing its spark plugs...

My 2006 car ticked for as long as I had it. I think some are just noisier than others for whatever reason.

I changed the plugs on mine with well under 20K on the odometer. I knew of the problem and didn't want to deal with the grief if they broke. Replaced them with a single piece brisk.

That's the first time I've heard that the 4.6 3V is notorious for passenger side ticking. Mine has 87k miles and it's as quiet as a mouse. Just the normal injector clicking and nothing else.

Not every single one of them does it LOL. But quite a few do, some from valvetrain (lifters) and some from tiny exhaust manifold gasket leaks.

The stock exhaust manifolds don't leak but some aftermarket headers do, and that's probably what causes the ticking.

OP here, posts made over the last couple days have certainly been helpful. Thank you, folks. I am now better prepared for troubleshooting with my mechanic tomorrow.

Got my GT back! Replacement engine revs smoothly. Everything seems to work just fine. An rough idle problem was due to a new but bad Champion 7989 plug, per my mechanic. The bad 7989 was replaced with one of the old Motorcraft 2 piece plugs and things smoothed right up. Test driving this evening was quite satisfying. I had missed driving my car. Unfortunately, a ticking sound while idling that we thought was solved by tightening an exhaust manifold bolt seems to have returned. I may try to post a video in which the ticking can be heard tomorrow.
