Got cams in, but am struggling with timing marks etc. At no point did the cam sprockets come off the chain, but the alignment marks and chain links just don't line up with anything like at the start of the installation. I made marks on them, but it seems they're off. Black links are off.

Does the rotation throw them off when turning the motor over? It seems to rotate fine.

I'm about to pull the timing cover... UGH.

They only line up about every 75 rotations, if the marks were on the first time and you used the wedge tool you're good. IF you have even a little down you need to pull the timing cover and start over.

Yes it's normal. That's why most guys( for peace of mind that it hasnt slipped) sharpie or paint pen some markers from chain to gear before removing the cam bolt.

DID you put engine on TDC before beginning if not that could be your problem.

I followed instructions, used the wedge, TDC, as best as I could tell. The fasers and chain were marked with paint pen but in between installing sides I rotated the motor to be sure first side was right. Everything rotated fine. After the rotation , none of the chain marks lined up with marks on fasers. The fasers do look like they are in the right place , with crank on its mark and #1 piston up. You can see chain marks are off 1 link on each side after multiple rotations. I added marks on the links after I rotated the motor. The Black links are in the same orientation, one off.IMG_20190421_121955567.jpg IMG_20190421_121946896.jpg IMG_20190421_121938575.jpg

Made a stronger effort to put crank in proper orientation. These pics are after adjusting a little.IMG_20190421_121955567.jpg IMG_20190421_121946896.jpg

A little down?

I was contemplating rolling the motor backwards... to see if I can get it back to the point it started.

As long as the marks were lined up when you pulled the wedge, you should be fine. That's all I looked at when I did mine. If you rotated the motor after pulling the wedge the marks might not line up anymore until you do enough rotations (sounds like 75 from what people are saying).

Ok, stupid question, but did you install the phaser on the cam, and then put the chain on?

When I did mine, the stock cam rotated a bit when I removed the phaser. I put my Hot Rod cam back in, and had to use channel locks with a rag to turn the cam a little to get it to seat in the phaser correctly.

If you've spun the motor since the install, and they were lined up correctly then, it's going to be a little off. As someone has stated above, it takes several rotations before they'll line back up again

No the chain and faser together were layed to the side and cams went in. I did have to manipulate the cams a little to get them to line up with the sprocket dowel.

After the feedback Im going to once again... send it. :) Ill let ya know how it goes.

Well.. It lives. but sounds a bit rough. Motor sounds fine, no noise. Running stock tune. Anyone have a line on a good custom tuner and tune for K&N CAI, Xpipe with cats and axle back.. and of course, new Hot Rod Cams.

+2 on Lito. He just tuned my build and it runs great. 0 drivability issues You'll have to datalog each revision, but he'll get it dialed in within 3 to 4 revisions depending on your mods.

Lito, he fixed all kinds of stuff for me. It is clean and strong from idle to 7,000. I told him I hated the first 30 seconds revving to the moon on a cold motor bullshit that Ford had going on. Now my car just starts and settles immediately. Lito.
