Recently replaced my 305/40/18 Nitto 555R drag radials with 295/40/18 Nitto 555 G2 street tires. Wish I had done it sooner!

I guess I'm in the minority on these tires. They worked great on our 99% stock 06 GT. Basically a tune and axle back car. On my upper only Cobra these things didn't hook for crap. First and second was useless. Third was a gamble depending how warm it was outside. After I almost got beat by a GTI because I couldn't hook I went back to the 555R's.

Figured it was ok to post about my new tires in the wheel and tire section. The G2’s are a huge upgrade from the old 555’s.

555's are different than the 555R. You can't compare them. I have the original 555's on the front of my car. I'm really looking forward to swapping them to something else.

Prior to the 555R drag radials, I was running the 555 street version. After installing the Roush TVS, the 555’s were spinning all the time. Went through two sets of 555R’s, decided to to try the G2’s as I was already running them on the front.

I've got the same 295/40/18 Nitto 555 G2 tires on my NA 05 with 10 inch rims. At 28 pounds pressure ( Recommended by Nitto ) with a 4.10 gear and other mods, I have to launch from the 2 step set at 2000 RPM and very slightly slip the clutch TC AND AIR OFF. They handle great otherwise but I blow them off at any higher launch RPM... I LOVE the look but they are pretty useless at the track even with lower pressure. And I sure won't be breaking drivetrain parts. As a compromise for wear they work OK...

They're definitely not a good track tire. But when I purchased them I didn't expect them to be. I wanted more of street oriented tire. But I got tired of spinning any time I went past half throttle. I think I'm going to try the R888R next.

On the street vs. the bald drag radials they were replacing, they are giving me better street drivability. Car will not be back to the drag strip, or on a racetrack, so I decided to go with a street tire this time around. I have gone through two sets of drag radials since my TVS install 5 years ago, but I drive less than 5k miles per year.

So you were spinning 2.5 year old drag radials and now you are not on a street compound? (with the exact same amount of throttle?). I guess if it was really cold out or something, as otherwise, that doesn't make much sense.

The 555 G2’s will still spin, but under normal driving conditions they are better than the G1 555 and bald 555R’s.

I'm currently driving my 600 rwhp/515 rwtq '13 on these 4-year-old bald 555R's (and the one pictured has been plugged for 4 years too :) ) and I still hook pretty good unless I flat-foot the pedal.

I'm excitedly turning my NT555 G2's into ashes so I can get the R's as well. Hopefully they at least lay darker tracks!

@Gabe what size are those guys? I have 18x10 rear wheels, should be able to get 305's on there.

The set above is 305/40/18 on 18x10 wheels.
There's some bulging, but not as bad as the set I have on the 18x9.5 wheels.
305's really should be on 10.5-11"-wide wheels to get the full contact patch on the ground.
On a 10" wheel, anything wider than 285-295mm just bulges out the sidewall and you end up not putting down the whole tread anyway.

I always thought nitto's ran a little under sized.

The older models do. The 555's and 555R's are narrower than the other brands. But the G2's are wider. I had the G2's and 555R's next to each other before the swap and the G2's were easily a half inch wider. Both were 315/35/17. And I had to roll my fenders a little more after putting the G2's on.
