Gauge install in s197?

So I've never installed gauges before, mechanical or electrical. My biggest wonders is how do I tap into certain areas for readings? Such as where do I run a water temp gauge or oil temp/pressure? I've heard of sandwhich plates before but some people have said they're not worth it. Any advice on the process?

Btw I've searched a ton for any write ups and I can't find a definitive guide for this with s197s. Thanks in advance

When I installed my oil pressure gauge, I followed some of the tips and part specifications from this thread to t-into the oil filter adapter OEM pressue sensor port:

And this:

Thanks for the info, what gauges did you use?

I used one of these adapters for the oil pressure gauge (electric) sensor. No leaks or issues associated with it.

For fuel pressure I tapped the line before my factory FRPS. This was made easy as I redid my fuel system and there is a distribution block that had an extra fitting. Also tapped the vacuum line going to the FRPS for the manifold pressure. Just a little brass T fitting on the line.

In the above pic you can also see the brass T fitting that goes to the manifold pressure sensor.

Used the Autometer dash pod to mount the gauges.

All of these gauges are from the Autometer Elite series.

For oil pressure I used a Shelby Adapter block. It came with steel braided AN hose and fittings.

Yes, that is the one.

Thanks been trying to figure out how to clean up the brass trio down there that is a bitch to access.

Will be picking this up once I figure out how to get their Labor Day 10% off discount coupon to work

The fuel rail pressure sensor line is a good vacuum source to tap for a boost/vac gauge. Some centrifugal supercharger kits come with a vacuum block that you tee into the EVAP purge valve (?) to manifold line. I used the firewall grommet in the driver's side footwell to snake wires and lines from my a-pillar to the fenderwell and into the engine bay. To power the electrical gauges I ran a line from the driver's side a-pillar, along the edge of the headliner, and into the passenger side a-pillar. From there the wires go into the SJB where there are fuse taps to share power with key-on accessories (instrument cluster lights and rearview mirror auto-dim slots are ones I am using).

If you get a mechanical gauge with an incandescent bulb back lighting, you will want to tap into the headlight switch wire unless you want the back light to be on all the time. To access this, just pull the headlight switch panel and cut & splice into the yellow wire.

Wish I had pics for every step but I think you get the point.

Are there any filter clearance issues with the adapter? Can a Motorcraft FL820S sized filter still fit?

Is this for a mechanical gauge setup, or electrical?

Should work for either since the electrical Auto Meter has a physical pressure sending unit

I have one on order and also have an electric (Digital Stepper Motor) Auto-meter Oil pressure gauge once installed i will post

But I am sure Scott will chime in, but if you look at his photo the sending unit has wires coming out of the bottom of it....

I think it should but I couldn't tell you for sure as I have a BMR K-member. I've never heard of any issues in the past.

On mine electrical, but it would work for mechanical as well. It is just a distribution block with 2 NPT sizes. Seven ports in total as I recall.

i used a glowshift oil filter sandwich when i did my centri SC install. it's affordable and works well imo and they have good customer service. if you have factory k-member and sway bar the fl820s is a little tight but it fits.

Hi Scott, I'm going for the same Whipple and need to move out the fuel pressure sensor and install it a said, where did you get this sensor adapter from? I can't find any

I'm Ed but anyways my fuel sensor adapter came with the fuel rail kit I bought from Aeromotive. Nice quality kit but I did end up getting a few different angled hose ends to clear my inter-cooler plumbing. You may or may not have the same issues as I reversed the plumbing on the Whipple kit when I did my engine bay clean up. I do not have a crossover between the rails either. I pretty much bought the kit and then configured it my own way.
