I have M1 that's closing in on 3 yrs old but only has 800 miles on it and still looks and feels bottle fresh. I know the manufacturer says X number of miles or 6 months, but but hell, they're in the business of selling product. I live in a low moisture climate so that's not an issue. I know the obvious answer is if you're concerned change it. But that's not my question. Haven't been able to find an engineer that will tell me if it deteriorates with age?

I guess the question is crank case shelf life?

Send it to the lab for analysis. Just don't tell em it's 3 years old ! Their findings would be priceless.

forever. You'll be long dead before anything happens to it.

Damn and I thought I didn't put many miles on my car. I only change my oil once a year because anymore I put less than 5000 miles on it a year.

:clap:Thx. Anyone know a chemical engineer willing to chime in and possibly jeopardize his future career with big oil?

See post #2. Several companies that u could send a sample to. Every other opinion will be conjecture, or pure speculation. Their lab results / findings would provide for good info...and solve the debate once and for all.

6 qts of new M1 is chump change ( + new filter). Are u trying to.... 'save money' ?? Does a ..'go-fund me' page need to be started ?

This is the question of the ages... lol. I have always gone by Mileage and how dirty the oil looks. Especially with the current Synthetic Oils. Have had about 100 vehicles. Put over 100,000 miles on several. Always have run the cars enough to reach operating temp. to burn off any impurities that may blow by the rings. I had a 5.0 Explorer that went over 4 years with the same Mobil 1 while I was rebuilding body damage from a rear end collision that totaled the vehicle. I used to sneak it around the block every week as it was still drivable. One Buick Apollo that went about the same with no ill effects...

Have spoken with engine builders that do the same. Most will say to run break in oil when an engine is new but after that, go by mileage and how dirty the oil looks. Otherwise you're being Anal and wasting your money... My 05 GT has been on the same Mobil 1 for almost 4 years and the oil is still Honey Colored and very slick to the touch, 3,500 Miles. My Cobra has about 2,000 Miles on it ???? brand of oil from the previous owner. Probably 2 1/2 years. Same as the GT for color and feel...

The oil life sensors in the newer vehicles, it is recommended by the Manufacturers that they be trusted.. They somewhat analyze the oil and can go for years before coming close to 0% Oil Life...

What is anyone thinking will happen if this oil stays in the engine?

The car will outlive the owner. He/she will either sell it or destroy it mechanically long before any "old oil" issues ever arise.

Fucking nuts. Just pissing away money for nothing, and oil.

Have similar problem, 1000 miles/year. I put once in a while a very small drop of warm oil on a white coffee filter paper. After one day you see different fractions or rings, carbon, oil, water, fuel. That makes the decision a little bit easier. My experience is driven miles, not time. But engine should be get hot from time to time to strip out the water and fuel inside the oil from blow by. I have an oil separator, I get a lot of fuel/oil mixture in there.

right, but you're still dumping good oil down the drain or god forbid shipping it across the country. Why?

Roughly 100% of enthusiast cars are sent away out of someone's life before they are worn out. Wrecked. People get bored.

You need the newly released electric harley davidson. https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/en/motorcycles/livewire.html 0-60 mph in <3secs ! No gears, NO CLUTCH. On the fly adj suspension.

Check out the U tube video where the tesla blows away 1/2 dozen 707 hp (drag strip prepped/sticky tires ) dodge chargers..and let all of em get the jump on him, at the start. 1/4 mile strip.

On my old b-series honda stuff, the valve train would get a little noisier. I took that as a que to change the oil. I think the 4.6 is exhibiting the same quality. About 3500 on the oil and it seems a little rattlier and the oil is getting a little color. Quite a few tuning runs on it.

Dino oil will break down over time and it's exposure to oxygen. There are many chemicals in oil that will oxidize leading to molecular breakdown of the oil. How long that will take is dependent on many variables but heat cycles and exposure to moisture and air all accelerate the process. Synthetic oils do not contain these compounds that oxidize with air so will last much longer between intervals. There are so many outside and environmental influences on how the oil will break down there is no good blanket statement for cars that aren't driven everyday.
