i just bought a replacement key fob for my car because my unlock button didn’t work on the original. I was trying to reprogram the new one by taking the old and turning it to run 8 times. The locks cycled telling me it was in program mode but when I pushed the button on the new fob all the car did was honk. Does anyone know why it would have programmed the new key? Any help would be much appreciated.

On my 2010-on, you will need (2) key fobs to make another . Otherwise you will have to buy a blank and pay the Dealer $95 or so, to get another.
After that, you can get another keyfob blank cut anywhere and then using the original 2.. you can then program the third. For as cheap as the keyfobs are, I got a third so I wouldn’t have to take to Dealer or Locksmith in case of a loss

If you dont have two fobs, you'll have to take it to the dealer/lock smith....or I just programmed a second using forscan and a bluetooth obd2 adapter.

You don’t need 2 fobs to program another, you need 2 keys to program another one by yourself.

No, chip and fob are separate and have to be programmed separate from each other.

20 bucks for a modified elm327 usb/obd2 cable, laptop and a free forscan trial and you can program it all yourself.. Even if you only have one key. The replacement 2nd key needs to be a legit oem one. The third can then be a ebay/Amazon flip key or whatever you want. You can even program a keypad that you can hide/mount wherever.

On this generation aren't they combined into one unit?

In ‘10 Ford went to a key/fob in one. Its backwards compatable to ‘07. I have two oem keys and one 10-12 style key/fob that I programmed in my driveway.

They key doesn’t necessarily have to be oem its whether its the right frequency or not. Some non oem keys can be programmed others can’t. And you only have to use forscan if you only have one key, two or more and you don’t.

All true, but if you try and use an aftermarket key as your second, and the system doesn't like it, you're dead in the water until you order a new one that it does like as it erases them all to program the two primary.

I bought a flip key from Amazon.. It didn't like it for my second, but I had no issues programming it as my third after I got the two oem ones done. It's finicky.

I bought an oem key on ebay used for 20 bucks. Then bought a blank for 10 bucks. Swapped internals and had it cut at ace hardware. Oem for 30 bucks.

Man, this sounds confusing as hell. Just bought a 2005 convertible with 50K on it from the original owner. She claims there was never a key fob with the car and she only had one key for the car. I have some Ford fobs from junk yards is there anything I can do to program them or is it a trip to the dealer to get hosed?
