Tuned or not?

Hi All. I just bought my first Mustang, a 2006 GT with the 5 speed. I have never driven a Mustang before last Friday, but we were looking for a reasonably priced sports car. Found this one at a local Toyota dealership, price was in our ballpark, so we drove it on Friday and bought it on Saturday. Car drives nice and rides better than I thought it would. I did notice that the gas pedal seems a little touchy, like press on it a little and you have power. It does have a BBK intake on it. My question is, is the "touchy" pedal normal, or is it possible that this car has tune? I have only driven the car for two short trips, so I also understand that I am still getting used to it. It might be while before I get to drive it again, as we just got another snowstorm, and the roads are not good. Thanks!

BBK intake or throttle body?

touchy is such a subjective comment so hard to say, also of course it’s possible it has a tune.
Also, all 05-10 GTs are 5 speeds, MT or AT!

The BBK is a no-tune intake so it’s hard to tell. No tuner, paperwork or anything in the glovebox or trunk?

Also, pictures of the car!

It has a BBK intake. At like 1/4 throttle, there is power and the exhaust sound gets loud, in a good way. Nothing in the glove box but the owners manual and the trunk has a dust cover for the car. The transmission is a manual. Clutch pedal has about an inch or maybe a little more of free play at the top. The calipers are red, was that stock? If was driven decent, how long can I expect the clutch to last? From what I have been reading, these cars seem fairly reliable. Any preventative things I should be doing, other than regular maintenance?Mustang.jpg Mustang1.jpg

Calipers were not red stock. Car appears to have a chin spoiler and an aftermarket strut tower bar. My stock clutch lasted about 145k miles. It died pretty quick after the supercharger. Inch of free play at the top of pedal travel is normal.

It sounds like it has a tune on it. With the Bama tune I had on mine a while back, the car was at 100% throttle at probably 65-75% pedal.

the calipers have a cover over them, they aren't red, just covered, not stock.

impossible to estimate the life on a clutch IMO, travel sounds about right AFAIR

there's also a chin spoiler on the car that is aftermarket.

That car has a BBK CAI, Hotchkis strut tower brace, MMD chin spoiler, and stock brake calipers that are painted red. The touchy throttle response suggests that the ECU has an aftermarket tune 'cause if it had the stock tune, there would be a slight degree of throttle lag.

Thanks for the info. Now, if I want to get the ECU back to stock, how do I go about that? I have been under the car to check out the exhaust system, so if that is altered, how would that affect a stock tune? At this point, I am thinking I might like to get a less sensitive throttle. I also need some more seat time, for sure.

Stock tune will look for cats so hopefully those are still on there, with the mild mods on the car I’d wager it hasn’t had too much exhaust work done. Snap a couple pictures underneath if possible. As far as I know to get back to stock without the handheld tuner you’ll probably have to take it to Ford. I’m sure another member will chime in to confirm.

FWIW every other year I have to put the stock parts back on and reflash my ECU to stock for the CA emission test. I HATE the stock throttle response!!!! Like you said, get some more seat time on dry pavement and I think it will grow on you.

I am right in assuming that if I get the ECU reflashed by the dealer to stock, the car will run fine even with the BBK intake and different exhaust, assuming the cats are still in place? I am assuming from the sound of the car, that the exhaust is not stock. Maybe today I will see if I can get some pics of the underside, when it stops snowing.

Another option is to get a new or used unlocked tuner and contact [email protected]

He will get you a tune that makes more power than what you have and will work with you to give you what you want for throttle response. Fuel economy will be better as well if you can keep your discipline.
The tune from Manuel (AKA LITO on this board) will have better driveability than a stock tune as well.

He can likely get you a stock tune file if you ever decide to go back to stock at any point as well.

I’d bring it to a tuner and have it done correctly. Maybe get any other mods you want first.
But I have a stock intake I’ll sell you cheap if you want to put it back to stock.
