Here’s the strangest bug I’ve ever had

Ok, to start, I’ve resented changed the fuel pump....twice. Now on to the bug. Start out with a completely topped off fuel tank. The gauge reads full. Drive until the gauge reads 1/2 and the gauge will drop to empty. Shortly after the drop the car acts like it’s out of gas and dies. Fuel it up and it only takes roughly 8 gallons. So, at 1/2 something is making it think it’s empty so it kills itself. This is driving me crazy. Could one of you experts please give me your opinion.

So...you have a 2005+ Mustang w/ fuel sensing/operational woes, but with the minimal details you provide it's going to be a "crap shoot" of recommendations. Having added details would help like...actual year, motor, mods, past problems, how long this has occurred, etc.. The more the better...

I’m thinking the fuel pump crossover is not connected inside the fuel tank if your talking about a 05+ Mustang. Your using the fuel from the left side of the tank and not transferring fuel from the right side to the left.

The car is a 2007 V6 convertible. This has been an issue since Oct 2019. The car has had past fuel sender and pump issues

See...that's how you do it. As others recommend - cross-over pump.

If you worked on the fuel pump before, then my guess is something got disconnected. Either a wire or the crossover tube in the tank.

Check the gas pump and shipping unit connectors. The gas meter gets the value of the signal from both. You may need to replace one of them.

If it was the crossover, would the gauge be suddenly reading empty like that after reaching 1/2?
