My 2 cents: If your local emissions testing will allow it, put the money you were going to spend on axle backs and resonators toward long tube headers and the matching mid pipe of your choice. Sounds great through the stock mufflers, no drone and actually gains some real HP.

I had borla stingers that were pretty loud and didn’t drone bad. I would highly recommend them. They are pretty expensive but worth the money in my opinion.

I wish I had the money to do that, but I don't plan on putting that much money and work into a car that I don't plan keeping for more than 5 years. Also, Virginia can be strict on emissions.

From my personal experience, the Borla S-type stingers droned horribly with the stock mid-pipe in place. Perhaps with high-flow cats and resonators mid mounted before the rear axle may help reduce the amount of cabin drone, but if you're keeping the stock catted mid-pipe? I seriously doubt that just welding in a pair of resonators will make much of a noticeable difference. Meanwhile, I have since switched from the Borla stingers (S-type) to Borla ATAK axle backs. Since making the switch, I've noticed there is still drone when the engine is under a load between 1500-2000 RPM when in 5th gear on the highway, but once above 2000 RPM, the drone goes away. However there is no drone at all whenever the engine is not under a load. When I was still running the Borla stingers, the drone was really bad even when the engine was not under a load until getting above 2200 RPM on the highway at cruising speeds. Anyhow, I would highly recommend that you consider looking into either the Roush extreme mid-mounted cat back exhaust which eliminates the rear axle back mufflers altogether with high-flow resonators mounted before the rear axle or consider the Ford Performance FR500S (M-5230-S) axle back mufflers which do not produce any interior resonance drone at all. That being said, I really don't think you would be disappointed with either the Roush or Ford Performance exhaust setups.

I have an 07 with Long tube headers and Flow Master axle back, my first step to reduce noise was to use fat mat throughout the trunk and interior floor, reduced the overall noise in the interior while maintaining the rumble of the exhaust system outside., just a thought.

I am planning on adding sound padding to the trunk and behind the back seats. But that's only after I dial in the exhaust sound and drone as much as possible.

It sounds like you are planning to spend a lot of time and money to mitigate a problem that does not exist with higher quality cat backs to begin with.

As you don't seem to want to "hear" the "sound" advice being shared, I'm out. I wish you the best with what ever solution you find.

wym, I'm planning on getting a better axle back after seeing some of the recommendations and considering some of the ideas above. I'm liking the ford performance fr500s, the one recommended above. I just like exploring all the available ways to solve an issue and get all the info.

I have the Ford Performance FR500S (M-5230-S) axle back mufflers on my stock 05 GT.
Very nice sound. I've had several friends at work comment how good they sound and even my girl friend likes it!
Around $500.
Zero drone at any speed.
One thing I did before installing was to paint the cans flat black with high temp paint, as they are more visible that the stock mufflers.
Helped make them less noticeable.

I've been running the Pype Bombs on my Bullitt with stock manifolds and h-pipe for 4 years. I fuckin love the way they sound. I still get compliments on how my car sounds.

Corsa is way too quiet. I ditched them for my Roush axle-back exhaust. Perfect time, pretty loud, zero drone.
Other than the Roush extreme axle back aka high-flow resonator exhaust, Roush no longer offers a traditional axle-back muffler for the 2005-10 Mustang. The reason your Roush axle-back exhaust has zero drone, is they were re-designed for the 2011-present Coyote 5.0 models. The OP has the older 2005-09 4.6 3v and is therefore limited to either Corsa, Borla or Ford Performance exhaust systems or unless he considers going with the Roush extreme axle-back delete resonator exhaust or the Roush extreme cat-back exhaust which replaces the axle-back mufflers altogether with mid mounted high-flow resonators. Other than that, the OP really has no other options to choose from IMHO

That stock Bullitt setup with an axle-back sounded great, I loved mine when I had it, whatever it was Ford did in that Bullitt H pipe went a long way for the sound!

Yeah, every once in a while I debate on getting long tubes but then realize I don't want to mess up a good thing.

Addind resonators or sounddeadening is all fine and dandy, but not taking away the cause. Get borla, corsa or FRPP axlebacks to begin with.

After reading as many reviews and suggestions as possible, I bought the FR500S on eBay. Great sound, louder than stock, zero drone. I couldn't be happier with them.

Prior to making the switch to the Borla ATAK exhaust, I also considered "Pypes" Pype Bombs, Mac Boom Tubes and SLP Loudmouths. However after reading as many negative reviews concerning drone issues, I decided against them.

I've had at least 15 configurations on my car, go Corsa extremes and never change mufflers again.

I also considered Corsa Sport and Corsa Extremes, but from the youtube videos I heard, they seemed to produce a higher pitched, raspy type of tone which I really don't care for, as I much prefer the old school muscle car sound which produces those deeper/rumble type exhaust tones. I also can't justify the $784-$806 price tag for just a pair of axle-back mufflers when there's other options such as the Ford Performance FR500S part# M-5230-S that can be had for over $200.00 less over the Corsa's for $577.99 which also have been documented to produce zero resonance drone as well. Anyhow, just saying
