Hey guys I just got a 2005 mustang gt 5spd. first stick shift car. everytime I'm at a red light and go from neutral to first it takes extra effort (or even going into reverse from neutral in parking lots) and there's a loud clunk in the transmissio .

HOWEVER if I hold the clutch in, throw to first, pull back into neutral (clutch still in) then throw back into first its smooth as butter and the car drives perfect. I do have a racing clutch (not sure which one) not sure if that has anything to do with it but there's also a scraping noise when the clutch is pushed in. not sure what the issue is.

Anyone know the cause / fix for this??

Why are you running a “racing clutch”? Like juice said, your clutch is dragging.

When first selecting 1st gear the snycro ring has to grab onto 1st gear and move it just a little bit to get the teeth lined up with the syncro hub and lock onto it. If the teeth are chewed up just a little bit it will take some effort. But once the teeth are lined up it's perfect allowing you to then shift back to neutral and then back to first and it slips right in smooth as butter. You bought a used Mustang with some miles on it, some mods on it, and a stock Tremec transmission.

Make sure every part of your clutch system is working perfectly and make sure the fluid is good. Make sure engine mounts, and transmission mounts, and shifter mechanisms are firm and not worn out. Spend future money on making sure that stuff works properly instead of more mods adding HP. The 2005-2009 cars didn't shift that great brand new off the dealer lot. Now they can be had fairly cheap and most have lots of hard miles on them, lots of mods, and the basic stuff that keeps everything working good has never been modded or maintained. Adding more power does nothing is you can't complete smooth and precise shifts. New CAMS cost $800 bucks, add about 25HP, and put more stress on your drivetrain too the point you start missing 2nd and 3rd. You could have spent $50 on new brass shifter bushings instead and never missed a shift and lost a race.

Spend your time researching this forum. There is TONS of knowledge to be gained on maintaining and improving your clutch system, shifter system, and even rebuilding your Tremec.

Thank you I appreciate that. I'm curious, any ideas what kind of clutch I can get that's same weight as OEM but not OEM? I know aftermarket brands like exedy have amazing clutches I just dont need a high performance clutch and dont want one but not sure what to get. seems like there's tons of clutch options

Centerforce Dual Friction. It is the ONLY brand I will install in my cars. Feels like a stock clutch but smoother. Has way more holding power than stock.
This is my 3rd car that got a CF clutch. Got a dual friction in my 91 GT, it makes 420 rwhp.

Try shifting from neutral to second gear first leaving clutch in and then to first.

Put a LUK in it and get back on the road. For OEM LUK no questions. Installed hundreds of them in many different cars.

I have a 2002 GT, my transmission was acting the same way, it was my throw bearing.
