My money is on the theft system having disabled the car when the alarm went off. Key in ignition shouldd have cleared it, that I dont make sense.

Agree but I also wonder if the key itself may need to be reprogrammed.

Once ignition is turned on should the alarm light in cluster stop flashing
Mine stays on flashing slowly

Correct, the theft light should stop flashing.

You will need the following items to diagnose and repair your issue:

One OBD2 ELM327 USB adapter WITH HS can/MS can switch. I advise against WIFI or bluetooth ELMs. Those are ok for diagnostics, but can be spotty for programming. https://www.amazon.com/Forscan-Scan...words=obd2+elm327+cable&qid=1589834788&sr=8-7
Forscan diagnostic and programming software. Software is free, a trial 60 day license is also free.
2 keys, and here is a potential issue: what is wrong with the ONE key you do have? Either way, you need TWO keys to complete PATS programming using the Forscan software.

I suggest you just start with diagnostics using Forscan. What are the codes. Your PCM cannot detect the key for some reason. You must be sure you don't have any hardware related issues with the theft system, like a bad sensor ring around the ignition key, before you attempt to program the system. Or programming will Fail.

Oh yea, a windows laptop is also needed.

Other option is take it to a dealer along with a couple of extra keys and fobs you can purchase online for $10 - 20 ea. I just did this for my son's car because we didn't have two keys. The dealer programmed all of them and cut the new keys for ~$120 out the door. Expensive I know but better than being locked out.

Montreal Qc,
Pro tip.

ALWAYS have a minimum of 3 keys.
One gets lost you can still program your own keys.

Suggestion:
If you rather have a unikey (key\fob combined) instead of separate key\fob for these S197's here is the key to get:

Strattec #5921186 Mustang IKT Key 4B SA/HA Bar Code# 5921186ADB001
This part is officially licensed by Ford
I have 1 myself.....programmed easily using the same process (got it cut at the local locksmith then used both my spare transponder keys programmed the ignition side then used the fob process & programmed the fob side...all by myself).

You won't find these at the Ford dealer (at least not at my local Ford dealership.....they told me that this type of key didn't exist for my '09 GT.....). Bought mine on eBay from seller autokey4you.

FYI...…………..

Why would the key loose its program ?

is this a common problem ?

Can the PATS be deactivated or bypassed to stop this happening again ?

thanks

Failed sensor ring around ignition could do it. The computer does not know WHY the key is not sending the code. PCM only knows it can't detect the programmed keys.

Update
Been to car this morning
Theft light flashes then does go off once ignition is turned to on position

so maybe not a PATS issue

as i said before i opened car with key as normal and alarm went off
Alarm went off when i turned ignition on

is there a relay i can jump to start it

or maybe a bad fuse ??

thanks

I would check for power at the starter with a test light. Both wires should be hot while trying to crank it.

Or hit the starter with a hammer, tap on it a.few times and try to start it.

Well, that just tells me you need a new starter. The brushes are worn and it is just a matter of time before it wont crank again. Hitting it may only work 2 or 3 times. Sorry.
