Battery life depends on two main factors besides keeping them charged. Number of charge/discharge cycles and how deep of a discharge during a cycle.
Starter batteries in cars are ok to discharge to 80% capacity.
Yellow top style hybrid starting/deep cycle can take 50% discharge.
True deep cycle can be discharged to 20% capacity. (Like boat trolling batteries.)
Discharge them further, and it takes life out of them.

How can you charge a battery dry?? And good luck with the "draining the electrolite" as you could never get it all out.

Not necessarily true,,but then you need to re-read my post..
How are batteries charged dry--easy..

How can you charge a dry battery? You need electrolite to complete the circuit. Its physics/chemistry.

From Chemistry point of view, you can put plates with Pb and PbO2 together without charging anything.
I don't know how they produce it, I think they empty the cells for storage.

Edit:
I bought my motorcycle AGM battery with an acid pack to fill it up by myself. Don't think an AGM cell can be emptied?
I want to remember that "maintenance free" means over 6 years, according to Yuasa Batteries. After 6 years you should take a look inside add water if necessary and stirr the acid.
