currently my 05 gt is leaking gas when filling up at a gas station. The first few gallons go in no problem but after maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank it starts to flood gas out. Does not leak gas before or after pumping the gas. All of it does not leak out only a few gallons (maybe 1-5?) but it all comes out real quick at once. Car also has a gas smell.

im thinking that maybe it’s the filler neck tube or the rubber grommet but I can not find a single rubber grommet for 05-09 mustangs. I’m only finding the grommet for 99-04 mustangs. The filler neck tube for 05-09 does not seem to include the rubber grommet that I’m hearing about so I’m also wondering if 05 mustangs even have a rubber grommet on the filler neck tube. How can I pinpoint the leak before ordering a filler neck tube? I was thinking of putting the car on ramps, have someone put a gallon of gas with those small gas tanks, and me look around underneath the car and see if I can see a leak. I’m also going to look for holes on the filler neck and gas tank.

There's a length of rubber tube between the fuel filler neck and the tank. It's possible that's cracked and leaking fuel as the tank gets close to full.

Is there a check engine light on for a evap leak?
If somethink is cracked/rusted in the filler neck area, that should throw a P code.

It may take some time for the CEL to come on, as the evap test only runs under certain conditions. If your scan tool does not show "Pending" codes, you may not be able to tell if there is a pending evap leak code.

cel codes are p2067 and p2068, not directly related I think. Seems it’s related to the 2nd fuel level sending unit but I don’t see how that could cause a fuel leak. I already had a spare one on hand so I’m going to swap in the new one tomorrow and hope that somehow fixes it. Maybe the o ring between the fuel sending unit and the locking ring is bad and once I put in a new o ring it’ll fix the leak. Doubt it but it’s a start.

Known problem with '05 GT's. I have owned one for a number of years and past discussions owners believe this was a factory defect that was never fixed as far as I know. Would not consider this a parts leak but the gas is being pushed back of the filler tube as you fill the tank. Someone suggested turning the gas pump handle upside down as you pump gas and the gas would not pump back out. Sounds dumb but that is what I do. Apparently a design flaw from Ford and would be nice if there is a fix but have not checked with Ford. Hope that helps.

I have to pump my 05 GT with the handle upside down or the handle will click off every 2 seconds.
Upside down, fills right up, no problem.
