A/c clutch squeak?

I've had my 06 GT from new here in the UK. Summer weekend car, bone stock, and still has only 40k miles.

I had the a/c compressor replaced at 35k miles and immediately noticed a faint squeak on startup, but it would go when warmed up. I thought it might bed in, but it's slowly got worse over the last couple of years, and is now a constant twittering sound. It does quieten down a bit when the a/c is on, but is still audible.

What should I check first? Could it be the a/c clutch?

Thanks in advance.

Are you using a brand name belt? I was getting belts off of eBay after my supercharger install because of the big price difference. I was getting belt noise all the time. I finally wised up and bought a Gates belt. No more noise.

Thanks for the replies. It's still on the original belt, as far as I know. I'll try the water mist trick.

However, the fact that it quietens down when I switch the a/c on (i.e. more load on the belt) points at the a/c clutch, I think.

I'd say the problem is more likely to be the belt itself. It's 14 years old and has probably lost some of its flexibility. If the flat surface appears glazed, it's more likely to slip and squeak.
