What's an early 90s foxbody worth?

I have a friend whose looking to get rid of his dad's 90s foxbody. I know very little about it (don't even know what year it is).

Here's what I do know though:
  • Body condition is decent I think, but its been sitting under trees in their driveway for years, no idea what the paint looks like under the dirt
  • It's a 302 Auto car. Says it ran when it was last driven about 4 years ago. Has over 200k, but not sure how many (I think the odometer works, he just hasn't checked).
  • Interior is complete, but not sure on condition, he says it has some mildew/mold.
  • His dad bought the car new
Here's the situation... His dad has some serious health problems, and they just want it out of the way. My friend told me to just come get it, but I don't want to take advantage of the situation, so I'd like to come up with an offer (If I decide to even go through with it). What are you guy's thoughts, based on the info I have now?

I would say about -$6000 for a clean stock fox.
But not many (if any) unmolested example exist still.
Not seeing the car, it could be way less.

Best offer I had on my 91was $8000.

Can't say without pics at least. Could be a total mess. With mold mildew inside that sounds like water intrusion. Could have rot issues or just bad seals. 200K is high mileage. Almost all cars ran when parked. Four years on it may not run now without substantial fixes. Sitting outside for 4 years it will need complete brake work. Critters could have made a mess of the wiring.

Wash it to see how it cleans up. It'll also make you look at almost every inch of what you wash. Put a fresh battery in and some good gas and see if you can make it fire up.

But that mold/mildew inside is concerning to me.

Got any photos? I’m not too knowledgeable on the current prices but I like seeing people projects!

It sounds like if they’re happy for you to just take it then you should be able to hit a happy middle ground where you get a decent deal and they get a little cash out of it. I miss my ‘91 hatch, I’ll have to get another one some day!

Also, if it is a coupe it's worth more every day of the week.

I would probably classify it as a basket case, as you said gohkl. And it's a fast back, not a coupe, unfortunately. (Thankfully not a vert, or I wouldn't even be interested lol). I have asked my friend for a few photos, and I'll share here.

Hmm, unmolested.
Cant really tell condition needs cleaned.
Inside looks ok all things considered.
Been parked a long time, wonder why.
Does it crank over atleast? How does the fuel smell in the tank?
Looks a bit scary to me.

It's been parked for around 4 years I think, and used very little prior to that. My friend mentioned something about a bad sensor that prevented it from running or something, but it did run last time it was parked. I'm thinking about offering 500 for it? Does that seem fair to you guys?

I'd check for rust before making any offers, rust in critical structural areas.
Other than that, $500 would be a steal IMO if the chassis is solid. Not going to be a "quick flip" money maker, but 4 years of sitting isn't too bad. That fuel should not be too far gone.
That sensor thingy should not be a big deal, but those cars have minimal diag capabilities. No live data or code descriptions. Just stored and hard faults reported as 2 digit codes. Need a jumper wire and the ability to count flashing CEL light. lol, Then google it. haha

$1000 bucks is probably close. Unless it's seriously clean and rust free under the dirt and dust. If it was get in and driveable it'd be worth a couple to few G.

$500 is good any day of the week. You could sell parts and double that easy.

These cars are S I M P L E.

It is either an '87 or '88 as there is no mass air meter and the steering wheel is a pre 1990 non-airbag wheel.
Other than that, it looks to be bone-stock under the hood. There is probably enough there that if you got it for under $1500 it is a decent deal.

I just saw the pics. That car will clean up nicely. The tell tale places under the hood are very clean looking (corrosionwise). It needs a major inside and out detail. I'd buy that car for $1000 any day of the week. If you can get it for $500 without insulting your friend BUY IT.

And I concur it looks like it is very unmolested. Also RED09GT is spot on it's an 87-88 car.

EDIT: I just noticed that it's on a blacktop or concrete driveway. That probably saved that car. Parked on dirt, that car would be DOA underneath. Moisture attacks from below on dirt.

Check the bottom of the doors, torque box area subframe areas and under the driver/passenger foot wells. Also at the bottom of the front strut towers. They go bad there often.

Steam cleaned, washed, waxed and running/driving....you could flip it for $4-5k or more if it is rust free.

That car (like all '87 to '91 LX models) originally had black beltline mouldings. The fact that they are color matched now means theres a good chance it has had a respray so check it over for poorly done bodywork. Of course it's also possible someone just painted the mouldings but that's much less likely in my experience.

My 82 GT had at least 4 coats of paint on it. Paint was cheap back then.
And yeah, the beltline mouldings were definitely painted. I remember slicing mine off with a piece of piano wire. I had trouble with the early 90's 3M double sided tape, the red backed 3M double sided stuff eventually solved it but there were a few times that I came back to the car on a hot day and saw the door moulding either sitting on the ground or peeling off the car.

Wasn't uncommon to see a car with painted moldings. Personally, factory black moldings with a red stripe (which was an option) looks good on a white car with the porno red interior.

Spoke to my friend about the foxbody earlier, and looks like he's decided not to sell right now, which is totally fine. Thanks for the help guys.
