Sway bar link bolt

I’m at a loss. I’ve never had this happen before. When I tried to remove the nut from the sway bar link, it would just spin. I put a wrench on the backside to hold the nut but that did not do anything. It continued to spin. I then tried a socket on the front of the bolt while holding the nut with a wrench, but still no luck. Anyone have any advice on how to get the nut off?

Try Vice Grips on the stud part if the 8mm socket is slipping / rounded.

Worst case.... Sawzall.... and buy another end link.

Get the correct fitting tools, PB Blast the pi$$ out of the area, wait & then give it a try. If all else fails, break-out the torch. :D

Its the self locking nut that is making the stud spin.
I use a 8mm or 5/16 socket (1/4" w/ratchet) to hold the stud from spinning. Back nut off w/wrench (18mm iirc).

Not sure if a a sawzall will fit but I think that may be the way I have to go. Regardless of which part you hold, the other just spins....unless the nut can be cracked open

I tired that. The nut kept spinning. I’ve never had this happen. It’s weird.

If you hold the stud at the hex with a wrench or vise grips it can not turn. Use a 6 point box wrench to turn the nut while holding the stud.

Is the nut spinning but the stud is not? If so, the nut was over torqued and is now stripped. Time for demolition.

The stub has a ball attached inside the rubber boot it is designed to spin, you'll need to put a wrench on the back to hold the stud then use an impact gun on the front nut.

A buddy recommended a grinder or a chisel on the nut. I may give that a try and see what how it goes.

If the stud is stripped, cut off the stud flush with the nut. Than just tap out the stud.

If you haven't done it yet, try an impact gun. You may get lucky.

OH sorry nowhere did I read he had tried an impact gun on the nut.
I think he should just spin it till it melts.

I've dealt with the same thing on my 90 notch. Had some cheap hardware store locknut that stripped out on the link. Iirc I got the cutoff grinder after it. PITA.

Black with the grease fitting. That looks like an aftermarket link, the OEM ones are cast aluminum and sealed. If the threads are stripped, maybe a dremel and cut-off wheels can get in there.
