Finally found my suspension clunk when going up my drive way...

About a year ago I lowered my car and have had a clunk ever since. It only occurs when really felxing the rear end, like entering my fairly steep driveway. This has been driving me crazy because I couldn't figure out what it was. Well during my routine oil change I was looking over everything and finally found the culprit.

The rear springs are compressing and hitting the metal "cup" in the chassis, causing the clunk/noise. See photos attached. Did I somehow install these wrong (not seeing how I could have...)?

I also noticed that the paint between the coils appears to be scratched/shattered, as if the coils are compressing against each other. Is this normal?

I have the Steeda ultralite springs front and rear. I have fixed LCA, a LCA relocation bracket, adjustable UCA and an adjustable panhard bar.

Man, that is weird. I wonder if clocking them 180* would do anything?

Do you have an adjustable 3rd link? I noticed this before. My springs getting close to those cups when I was adjusting the pinion. Obviously I was way off the adjustment, but when I got it right the springs were centered.

What about an adjustable pan hard? As mentioned, if it's hitting the sides of the cups the axle may not be centered.

Rotating 180* sounds like a good idea.

I have Koni yellows, currently set on the weakest setting, but that should be plenty to dampen the rear for normal driving, should it not?

The axle is centered with an adjustable panhard bar, when sitting on the ground.

The springs are hitting at the very back of the spring cup, not the sides.

I can see how the adjustable UCA could make the axle favor the rear of the car, but to my knowledge, it is adjusted at the correct pinion angle. I adjusted it myself, and I will admit, that was a very confusing procedure, but I think I did it correctly.

May want to check with Steeda, but those do not look like Steeda's Hypercoil springs that they use in the rear.

What is "Hypercoil"?

I'm going to check with Steeda about this tomorrow. Seems like a really weird issue.

Hypercoil is the brand of rear springs they use. They have more than enough clearance to not rub the cup.

Ok thanks. I'm gonna email them or something. I know these are way bigger in diameter than my factory ones. Thanks.

I swapped to Steeda's about a year ago and when i received the springs i questioned why they were so small. They said its what they use now.

It looks like your rear springs aren't stiff enough. Do you have anything heavy in the trunk like a heavy subwoofer? Do your springs stay seated on the perch at full droop?

No. I don't have anything in the back that weighs much, just the usual junk, and my 6ft pull bar for the frakentensioner.

The springs do stay seated with the suspension under no load.

Interesting. Those almost look like my Steeda Sport front springs. The rears are significantly smaller in diameter and the wire it smaller also.

They can't be installed wrong though. In the picture below, the right side is the rear, left side is the front. Now, it could be a manufacturing defect. I'm in communication with Steeda on that. They are asking for the specific number on the rear springs to see if they match the kit I ordered.

You need to make sure you're running an adjustable panhard bar to center the axle under the car. Its a must have for any lowered s197 car

I have had stock, BMR, Ford Racing and Eibach springs on my car and I have never seen any that fat. they do almost look like front springs but I know the spring perches are different sizes front to rear. All of my rear springs have looked similar and much narrower than the front.
