I've been considering a gear upgrade from the 3.35 that is in my 07 GT and to a 3.73 gear. I'd like to hear form those who have done this and hear what their opinions.

You said 3.35's...you mean 3.31 or 3.55 's? Stkjock is right, there's tons of threads on it. But I upgraded from 3.55's to 3.73's and there wasn't a huge difference. Slightly faster acceleration, but mostly just a little easier to accelerate like the engine wasn't working as hard. I did the swap because my old gears had developed a bad whine so I was replacing them anyway. I personally didn't want to go 4.10's because I was doing a lot of highway driving at the time.

If you want to see a noticeable difference, go to the 4.10's. You're only going to see a slight decrease in highway mileage. Bang for buck is substantial.

I did the 3.31 to 3.73 swap. It made a noticeable difference, but in retrospect, I would do the 4.10. Same scenario as above, it was my DD at the time and I was worried about MPGs. It barely made a -1 or -2 difference in highway and none in around town mileage.

Going from a 3.31 to a 3.73 increases the rpm (and torque multiplication) in any gear by 12.6% at any given speed. Going to a 4.10 increases the rpm by 24.0% and that's a difference you'll really feel in the SOTP.
The decision on which ratio is suitable will depend on what performance mods you have now and whether you're planning to add more in the future.
BTW, love the wheels on your car. Which ones are they?

Manual or auto?

I have 2 manuals, one with every bolt-on including cams and 4:10's, the other with a S/C and 3:73's.
Previously had an '01 Cobra with a S/C and 4:10's and a Lightning with 3:73's. Not all the same apples, but for my use over 20 years, hands down 3:73's. Hated the 4:10's in the Cobra.
My priority was spirited driving and road trips to shows, not every tenth at every stop light, so it's really a "YMMV".

The exception for me, if you have an auto, I'd then consider bumping to 4:10's.

We just put 4.11's in my sons car. Very noticeable difference over stock gears. Can't comment on 3.73's tho. Either way I think you will happy over the stock gearing

I did a tire size swap that amounted to the same thing as going from 3.55 to 3.73 (leaving tires stock). Acceleration has a bit more 'sparkle' about it, enough to be noticeable but by no means 'brutal' by comparison.

If you have the manual transmission, 1st gear would probably feel a little too short for easy normal street driving with 4.10 gears. Turning onto a 50 mph main road and having to wind out two gears to 5000 rpm and still being below 50 mph is likely to get old after a while. 1st is short enough with 3.55 gears.

For N/A applications, you'll notice very little difference between 3:55 vs 3:73 gear ratio. However, I can't comment on upgrading from stock 3:31 to 3:73 as my car's stock gear ratio is 3:55. Therefore, IMO I would recommend going with 4:10s if your looking for a noticeable improvement over stock. If your car on the other hand is FI? I wouldn't upgrade past 3:73 gear ratio, as 4:10s aren't really necessary when running a FI application, to begin with anyhow. IMHO 3:73s are considered as the sweet spot between 3:55 and 4:10 gear ratios.

I recently went from 3.55 to 3.73 on an NA setup (manual car). It's been the worst money i've spent on the car to this point. Gotta 4.10 swap coming in the near future. Maybe the 3.73's will come in handy down the road if I go with forced induction?

Some like 4:10's with forced induction while other's feel 4:10's are just a bit too short and prefer a taller 3:73 gear ratio for street/highway cruising. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference.

Shifting gears has never bothered me so the short 1st gear would never be an issue to me. I cruise in my SVT (6speed) focus in 5th gear at 35+ MPH and do the same with my mustang and the TR6060 (did the same with the TR3650 as well), never once has my brain said "I wish I could have made one less shift". I've never run into someone that has driven an 05-10 GT with 4.10 gears and complained about needing to shift, the car just moves with so much less effort.

Go with 4.10's if you want to wake it up but 3.73's will be a good difference over the 3.31's. I went from 3.08's to 3.73's in a fox body mustang and the difference felt amazing.

I use 4.10's in my built motor Turbo car with a 28" radial. The 3.55's were terrible in the 1/8th mile as I had to shift to 3rd 100ft from the stripe.

I've struggled with my next gear change. Currently have 4.10's with a very small slick, 25" tall. I hit the limiter at about 1220 feet. Since I put the big brakes on the car those slicks/wheels won't fit. Going to a bigger wheel, taller tire. Was thinking of going to the 3.73 set for my extended highway usage. Maybe I'll stay with the 4.10's. I just assumed it would be too much for a turbo car.

If you know someone who has a stock 08-09 Bullitt then ask to drive it as they came stock w\ 3.73 gears running OEM 27" dia tires to get a feel for them to see if they're for you...........

My 2 cents.

Hope this helps.

I guess I’m in the minority but I went from 3.55 to 3.73 when I did cams and intake and it’s perfect for me, it’s way better than the factory 3.55s were. I can see the appeal of the 4.10s, I just went mild since my car is an every other weekend cruiser.

I based my gear choice on math, top speed coming into the busstop at WGI in 4th at redline. I would say 3.90s ar at my personal limit for street driving. Turning about 2300 @70mph. A bit on the high side for me, but it pulls nice. No need to downshift to pass!
So think about what your goal is for the change. ;)

This ^^^

It's particularly applicable for autocross or track driving . . . or even on the street in situations where a too-short 1st gear is less pleasant to work with than a somewhat taller 1st.
