i went back to stock cams to reclaim low and mid end power blower makes plenty of top end. i am putting it on the dyno tomorrow see how much i lost peak going back to stock
I understand that when I put my new motor together I went with the comp 127300. Those cams made my car much more enjoyable

At 490rwhp 9-10psi the car was fine, pushed the boost up over 12-14psi windowed the block it at the track on 100octane race gas, it happens even with a great tune, no issue now with the built motor pushing 24psi.

Yep this.

It’s all about tuning and if possible run ethanol to keep her burning cooler. Run ethanol and have a good not-too-agreesive tune and you’ll never see detonation and never have a problem.

I would recommend VMP tuning service to anyone with a 3V... only service I’ve ever used and the car has run perfectly every time they’ve tuned it for me.

All this said, I’m still going to build my engine with forged rods, pistons and billet oil pump gears soon because I have even higher power levels in mind for future... or if I ever want to sell her, having all the difficult and expensive things already done will be more attractive to other enthusiasts.

Wow those are some incredible numbers. I am about to install a DoB manifold and GT500 blower with the 2.875" pulley which is slightly more boost than he recommends for a stock block. I may have to use VMP tuning. I am in Tampa so it's only a couple hour drive from me.

Wish I was that close... I’m in Texas so have to do the repetitive log-email-log-email-log-email... thing until the tuner is happy with what he sees.

That GT450 manifold is awesome. If I was to change the blower... that is absolutely what I would do... install the DOB GT450 and buy a “supercharger only” kit... biggest displacement I can find... so I could keep the rest of my setup.

Just curious... I’ve never used “race gas” ... did you have your car tuned for that race gas and it still detonated and threw a rod?

e85 is about 108 octane... e90 about 114, but I don’t want to get away from the most important difference between e85 and gasoline. Y’all may already know this, but ethanol burns cooler and more efficiently than gasoline. This is not just about octane... but the thermodynamic properties of the two different fuels. Tuners can safely run more timing and produce more horsepower with ethanol... I would never be able to run at my power level without it.

All that said... if I took my car to Texas Motorplex every weekend and launched with drag radials on prepped surface... I might punch a hole in my block too... no racing for me until engine and trans are built later this year.

How is tuning going to save you from the pretzel stick connecting rods ?? Depending on how often the blower is used, and if revved to the moon, the rods will eventually succumb to metal fatigue. The only way I can see tuning to save the engine, might be to reduce timing in the midrange, which will reduce midrange tq.
Tuning and e85 just prevent detonation... which causes most thrown rods. That aside, totally agree that if you run balls to the wall all the time, rpms will probably sooner or later wear it out and it will let go. If you have 600-700 whp on a stock 4.6 3v block, you should either have plans to build your short block, or abstain from too much redline driving.

And yes a good tuner also keeps the timing dialed back in this situation to keep things together.

I question how much and how hard you guys drive these supposed 650whp stock block cars...
I drive pretty hard but will not take it to a track... only racing has been rolls on the HWY which is not as hard on the engine and trans... and no DRs until built engine and trans either... clutch wouldn’t last a week!

Dang it must have been pretty bad to change back. I’d trade some low end torque for top end power in a heartbeat... my low end power is way more than what’s usable with my Pilot Super Sports. I can’t even punch it in 3rd on the hwy without spinning all over the road. That’s why I probably won’t ever go to a bigger blower and instead probably send Livernois a set of heads to port.

After many years of research and this car sitting here doing nothing I learned how awesome the DoB manifold is. The cooling potential is amazing and so is the fact I can upgrade to any of the bigger GT500 aftermarket SCs if... when really... I do a forged block down the road.

Switching to E85 was the second best mod I ever did. Next to the SC itself.
Power, safety, and I save a little money also.

I thought they lost low mid tq everyone says cams do but after going back to the dyno with stock cams thats not the case stock cams lost about 50whp low end was the same needless to say im pissed lol

what was your power numbers with the boost that high? doubt the boost did it had to be tuned for to much power

the fuel was VP 100 octane race gas (assuming it is called race gas because it is 100 octane) we can get at the pump at a station near my house, car was tuned slightly more aggressively than the 91 octane tune, I sure the fuel was the issue, we had gotten bad gas from the pump once before a while back.

Now I only run Ignite Red, it is expensive, but cheaper than a new motor lol. Like you stated in regards to the fuel, definitely allows you to "turn it up".

Heck yes... Ignite Red/114 is my favorite fuel. I had a drum delivered by the local distributor here in north Texas a couple years ago for like $450. It didn’t last long.
