I'm just wondering if anyone is running the Roush phase 3 supercharger on a stock gen 1 coyote bottom end. Is it asking for trouble or are they fairly reliable? I'm thinking of upgrading to phase 3 but don't want to blow the engine up. I hear people say you don't need forged rods and pistons for 600whp but how long do they last that way?

It depends on driver. I have a few out there like that with no issues. They are not racing the car or abusing the car. They drive spirited occasionally.

I have about 70 pulls with that exact setup (through at least 3rd gear, but some pulls on highway too and about 6 passes @ track). Shifts set on A6 for 7000 (7300 @ track). But I only have 10K orig miles. I suspect having auto really helps it live. Don't miss shifts, can't launch super hard.

I am considering getting the phase 3 kit since it has the same parts needed for phase 2 upgrade. I do plan on building a short block for the car in the future and I don't think I'll add the phase 3 parts until then. I'm thinking of getting the oil pump gears done then add the cold air intake and custom tune, the only difference between phase 1 and 2 is the intake and tune, the earlier phase 1 kits had a different pully but phase 1 and 2 share the 85mm pulley. With the phase 3 kit you get the 80mm pulley and a fuel pump voltage regulator. I have considered going straight to phase 3 and send it with the oil pump gears but I do plan on having fun with it. I won't be reving past 7000 rpms and according to roush they don't upgrade the internals. I may even stick with the roush tune for it if I decide to go all in and do the phase 3 kit with oil pump gears.

The mass air meter is different from Phs 1 to 2/3 (Phs 1 oval, Phs 2/3 round and a little bigger). In fact, if you are going to swap processors later on, you will have to go back to Phs 1 air cleaner setup and (MAF) to get it to run with "smogged" Roush tune. Not the end of the world, but another annoyance.

What I meant was phase 2 and 3 Mass air is the same, I am wondering if the phase 3 tune will run ok with the phase 1 air cleaner at light loads. I would assume so but don't know, I am keeping all options on the table. It's a minor pain but part of the fun is solving these problems. I have considered purchasing the correct J235 pass through device so I can flash the PCM myself, I know Roush will not ship the phase 3 upgrade kit to California, I ordered through Summit to see if they will, so far so good it's back ordered. I don't know if they will ship the PCM back to me with a phase 3 calibration which is what I would trust with upgraded oil pump gears to not grenade the engine lol. If I leave the 85mm pulley and install the larger air intake I'll get a custom tune and try it.

The Gen 1 Coyote stock bottom end is effectively limited to 550rwtq due to the high 11.0:1 compression ratio not allowing higher levels of boost on 93 octane without risking detonation. You could go slightly higher if you use E85. Otherwise you'd need to build the bottom end with forged rods and forged pistons with a lower CR e.g. 9.5. While you're there, upgrade to billet oil pump gears as well.

it's because the board staff decided long ago that discussions such as this were not tech for our board.

The (few years now) aluminator came with forged rods, pistons and crank, and the billet oil pump gears..and 9.5:1 CR. Sure, you can run more boost, but it will probably come out a wash. The older Roush 4.6 L engs (540H) came with 8.5 CR + 14.7 lbs of boost......and were typ 520 rwhp.

Those aluminators were a bargain for $6800.00 The standard coyote crate eng was $5800.00
The aluminator came in 2 x versions, 11:1 CR (no billet oil pump) which Roush used.....and also the 9.5:1 CR version, with billet oil pump, as noted above.

Not tech

Leave it alone or she'll blow

Don't do oil pump gears
