I have a 2006 GT with a manual transmission and a Hurst short-throw shifter. So yesterday, I was at a red light and was just playing with the shifter. I was going through the gears with the clutch in (as I normally do) and as I tried to pull it out of 3rd, it wouldn't move. I thought it was just acting up until I pulled with my entire body and thought I was going to break the shifter. When the light turned green, I rode the clutch to get the car moving and pulled off the road as soon as I could. I've seen people say their shift fork broke but any circumstance I saw it was while they were driving and under load. I was just sitting still, so I am wondering if the problem could be a simpler fix like the Hurst shifter. I am a novice when it comes to transmissions and would not like to pay to have the tranny dropped again. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

A broken shift fork was my first thought but since the TR3650 isn't known for that problem, it's possible that your Hurst shifter has indeed got stuck. Have you tried shifting the gear lever while the engine's switched off?
You might want to check that the engine and tranny mounts aren't worn as these could also cause shifting problems.

I'm sure a bad synchro will still enable for you to shift, just not as smoothly unless the syncro completely broke but I doubt that happened from reading the above. Get underneath the vehicle safely ( going to put in jacks stands) and make sure the shifter is secured to the vehicle. Go through America muscle, sometimes someone posts instructions on how to install a short shifter and that will give you an idea what to look for...

I have already had my transmission reworked. I used to have the problem of not being able to put it in third. While I was there I replaced the clutch too.

I can't think of anything in the internals that would break and not allow the shifter lever to move from the third gear position. Now, other things can happen that it would remain in third even though the lever moved to neutral. In that case if the lever moved to fourth, then it would be in two gears at the same time and the car wouldn't even roll...

A common example of this would be if the roll pin in the 3-4 fork snapped off. TR3650s like to snap the 3-4 fork roll pin and sometimes the 1-2 fork roll pin. The fork would potentially remain in third but still, the lever and shift rail would move to neutral and fourth, but it would not select neutral or fourth gear because the fork was left behind in third. In this case though, you could still select other gears, but again, it would be in two gears at the same time and wouldn't roll.

A TEST before pulling the transmission:
With the shifter linkage removed from the shift rail nub on the back of the transmission you should be able to push and pull that rail in and out. Pushed into the transmission without twisting would be fourth gear, pulled out one notch would be neutral and pulled out one more notch would be third gear.

Just when I think I have seen it all, there is always something new, but I would look very closely at the shifter mechanism. If the shift lever moves, then it is a different story. Linkage can break.

same thing happened to me twice( why I went to tr6060). you'll have to pull the tailcone off the tx to fix the shifter mechanism. simple fix once you gain access

Pull the shift boot off and see if the shifter stops for 3rd or 4th gear may have came loose, causing interference. I had this happen on a hurst shifter years ago because I didn't use locktight on them.

I had a 5sp Ranger tranny do something similar to me - it turned out to be that the "hub" portion of the synchro cracked in three places, causing it to "grow" a little in diameter and bind up the syncro ring. I have no idea how it happened (I had let a friend use my truck), but I did have to tear the tranny apart to find/fix it.

But first I think I'd take the shifter off and look for any untied shoe laces before committing to a tranny tear-down.
