Yeah...the old issue that has been discussed in the past....but my question is with regards to the plastic inserts.
Threads I have read discussed the ones from Coverlay...and these are still available for $157.16 a pair.
My question is that there are plastic inserts on ebay for $68 a pair...says same material, but no idea how the mold is.

Has anyone tried the ones on ebay?

Thanks

I ordered the coverlay inserts from lmr. Wasn’t crazy about the material or how they felt on dry fit. I returned them and got the American muscle leather inserts. They were a pia to install but look great

I have purchased two different "leather-look" inserts; one was so bad that I immediately returned them, the remaining one the cut is not even close. The description stated it was oversize and trimming is required, it would be easier if they just sent a rectangle piece of material instead of the cut piece they did.

Trouble is, to get these to fit is beyond my skill and tool set. Am going to take to a local shop...see if they will even attempt these and at what cost!

This is why I was looking at the PVC inserts. Do not know if there is one supplier and many sellers or what? Coverlay price is over 2x the ebay price...do not know if this is "you get what you pay for" or ???

I would spend the extra money and get the coverlays. Most things in life you get what you pay for.

Before I put the American muscle inserts on, I took my door panels to the local upholstery shop. When I picked them up, there was still green painters tape stuck in the grooves. And about 3 places where the black leather was damaged and you could see the white backing underneath. They just filled it in with black sharpie. What a joke.

I went with plastic “Coverlay like” ones from Amazon. Fit was very close to perfect Had to lay weights on panel overnight for silicone to set. 5AE4AAE5-7079-4B14-A45E-C91F0DC2A3AC.jpeg

Yes, it's definitely a "get what you pay for". I got the Coverlays and couldn't be happier with them. Only difference is I used construction adhesive instead of the supplied silicone. Of course I'm screwed if I ever have to remove them, but I don't anticipate that.

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I'd of just gone to the yard and grabbed the color you wanted.

I got rid of my leather door panels pretty recently with ones out of the yard that were just the standard plastic inserts. Only paid 60 for the pair. All Ford does is takes the standard panel and slaps on a leather insert over it, if you actually spend time and I mean a looooot of time with removing all the old adhesive from the panel, you could have it look like a standard one.

The ebay inserts are not well made and the fake leather is so thin that regular spray adhesive will soak through it. I've used both so I am aware of their shortcomings. The Coverlay inserts are pricey, but they are perfectly matched to the door trim and easily go on with some half inch 3M automotive tape. Don't waste your time with the supplied silicone, it's garbage and does not hold well.

I went with Coverlay and am very satisfied. Just like LAGA, I took my door cards off, and weighted the panels down with weights overnight for the silicone to set.

When I installed the Coverlay's on my buddies car, I used Tiger seal to set them, believe me when I say this, they will never---NEVER EVER come off again LOL!!

I am convinced to go with the Coverlay's. Going to go with slate gray inserts, then get some dark red welt cord to go around the outside edge. She has dark gray twin wide stripes with a dark red pin strip on the outside, from nose to tail; this on a black body.
Hopefully this all turns out.

Tiger Seal...going to have to look that stuff up.

It’s not the adhesive that fails. It’s that some people do not remove the backing pad/foam that remains on the door when the vinyl comes off. Removing this is a pain, but your Coverlay will fit better any any adhesive will work well.

I have the door panels down to the plastic...all that foam & old glue are gone. Sanded, sanded, sanded to get everything smooth as I was going to use the thin material inserts before deciding to go with the plastic inserts.

Then you should have no problem with fit or adhesion. As a retired carpenter, I have a variety of sharp wood chisels. They worked well on getting the old backing off.

No! You cannot remove all the factory adhesive. It cannot be done! The factory adhesive is some kind of epoxy that glues the felt panel to the door panel. This adhesive actually heats up when curing and melts the felt into the plastic! Trust me I tried for months, any and every tool on the market and chemical imaginable to remove this adhesive. I eventually just bought the Coverlay and put it on the panel.

This is after months of trying to clean this panel so it would look like just a standard panel.

This is the only thing I found that would remove it.

What does it take to get the door panels off? Any tricks or hidden fasteners?
